Thomas Wickersham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hurley Funeral Home - Pleasanton on Feb. 19, 2026.
Thomas "Tom" Hilbert Wickersham met his Biblical heroes upon arriving in Heaven on Thursday, February 19, 2026, no doubt already engaged in a thoughtful conversation, a kind joke, or a well-timed historical reference.

Tom was born on August 26, 1948, in Vandalia, Illinois, and was preceded in death by his parents, James Virgil and Myrth Elizabeth Wickersham. A gifted athlete at Vandalia High School, Tom lettered in varsity wrestling, tennis, and football.

Just five days after earning his Bachelor of Science in Education from Greenville University, Tom married his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia "Pat" Louise Young, on May 30, 1970. Together, they welcomed two children: their son, David Thomas, in 1973, and their daughter, Elizabeth Rose, in 1975.

Tom studied theology at Asbury Seminary and taught in Christian schools while the couple raised their young family. His seminary education and deep faith laid the foundation for a lifetime of bi-vocational ministry. Over the years, Tom served as a Sunday school teacher, interim pastor, jail ministry leader, and mentor-always ready with Scripture, wisdom, and just enough humor to make people feel at ease.

Alongside his ministry, Tom devoted his professional career to teaching U.S. history. He inspired thousands of students with his love of the subject, his encouraging spirit, and his signature blend of kindness and humor. Many students left his classroom knowing more about history-and feeling more confident than when they arrived.

In retirement, Tom delighted countless children as one of Santa's helpers. For 16 years, he and Mrs. Claus (Pat) brought Christmas joy to children while raising money for charitable causes.

Tom's favorite lifetime role began in 2009, when he became "Baba" to his grandson, Zachary Thomas Ginn. Tom poured wisdom, humor, and a love of Christ into Zach's life. In turn, Zach inspired Baba to earn his black belt in Taekwondo from Tri-City Martial Arts at the age of 73.

Tom leaves behind a legacy that honors God-his ultimate love-and a reminder that faith, learning, and laughter are meant to go hand in hand.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; his son, David; his daughter, Elizabeth (husband Jeremy); his grandson, Zach; his brother, James "Jim" (wife Donna); and many dear friends and extended family who were blessed by his wit, warmth, and wisdom.

The Wickersham family extends heartfelt gratitude to Shana Hatnot, New Century Hospice, and our loving community for their support throughout Tom's long illness.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 400 N. Reed Street, Pleasanton, Texas 78064. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Friday, February 27, at 10:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Pleasanton City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mr. Tom's Scholarship Fund at Tri-City Martial Arts via Cashapp: $TWickershamSchlFd or to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of South Texas, https://casasouthtx.org/donate/
