Timothy Frederick Dowd (September 16, 1939-December 31, 2024) Age 86
A renaissance man of sorts, Tim Dowd loved his wife and family, cats, golf, cooking, and cars. In the last thirty years of his life, he pledged an oath of faithfulness to sobriety and encouraged others to do the same. Born in Boston, he had lived in North Carolina, Florida, and finally in
Sonoma, California.
He is preceded in death by his father, Frederick Dowd, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, his mother Arline Dowd, a mother of five and avid gardener; his sisters Shirley Farrenkopf, Margaret Farr, and Genie O'Laughlin, and his adopted son Dommie Dowd. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, his loyal brother Michael Dowd, his only daughter Arleen Dowd, his dutiful friends Steve Rolling and Jacob Lange, and his faithful friend Father Jim Thomas. He was an uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.
His life's work included service as a U.S. Marine where he learned how to operate and repair all manner of military vehicles which launched him into a long career as a mechanic, salesman, and ultimately as a manager of dealerships in New York and California.
He and his wife doted on the lives of their many kitties: Bogie, Louie and Maggie, Clancy and Rooney, and surviving rescue Atticus Finch. Together, he and Linda took cruises and enjoyed R.V. road trips always with kitties on board. He also accompanied his daughter as a chaperone to a student tour of Ireland. There he provided both enthusiasm and vigilance for the children in his care.
An ace golfer, Tim held a membership at Rooster Run Golf Club where he entered the National Hole in One Registry with a 107 yard par 3 with a 9 iron at the sixth hole. Other than golf, Tim's passion was in the kitchen where his love language included homemade spaghetti sauce, shrimp scampi, chili, and the best gravy west of the Mississippi.
We who loved him know he was most proud of his thirty years sobriety through his continued affiliation with AA. His constancy in this organization became the axis of his life and enabled him to maintain sobriety, selflessly serve and mentor other alcoholics, and assemble a fellowship of brothers and sisters who were his extended family.
