Timothy Higgins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sullivan Family Funeral Homes & Cremation Service - Hinsdale on Feb. 18, 2026.
Timothy J. Higgins, age 77, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026 at Chicago, IL. Born in Detroit, MI on January 29, 1949. Tim grew up in Lincoln Park, Mich and attended Christ the Good Shephard and Lincoln Park High School graduating in 1967. He served proudly in the US Army with the 1st Infantry Division "Big Red One" from June 68 to Jan 70, including deployment to Vietnam. He was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Natl Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Army Commendation Medal w/OLC.

Following his military service he returned to Michigan and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He was diagnosed over 30 years ago with Early Onset Parkinson's due to exposure to Agent Orange while in Vietnam. His death was a result of complications from Parkinson's. He received excellent care through the VA Outpatient system in Ann Arbor, MI and Chicago, IL.

Tim will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the positive attitude he had throughout his struggle with the disease. Despite his health challenges he never lost his sense of humor and great laugh. His favorite hobbies were fishing, listening to Rock n Roll, classic autos and following Detroit and Michigan college sport teams. He delighted in maintaining contact with many of his lifelong friends from the neighborhood and school.

He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel E. Higgins and Rita R. Higgins (DuChene). He is survived by his sisters Christine Higgins (Richard Paul) and Bonita Johnson (Linas Bieliauskas); his nephew Matthew Johnson.

A Celebration of Life for Tim will be scheduled at a later date in Michigan. The final resting place of his cremated remains will be trusted to the care of Arlington National Cemetery. In memory of Tim donations can be made to The Gary Sinise Foundation, his charity of choice.

I met Tim in the first grade at Good Shepherd. He was a gentleman from the beginning and always funny. I´m so very proud to have known Tim for all these years and remember my mother and Tim´s mom grew up together and stayed friends forever. Rest in Heaven, Tim, You deserve it!

Tim was a fun part of my early teens. Playing ball in the street on Liberty. We would have about 10 kids each in a square bouncing the ball, and hopping on the curb when cars would pass. Also, throwing snowballs and grabbing bumpers of cars to be pulled in the snow. Great times. Tim, will be missed by so many.

My good friend since childhood. We grew up together on Liberty street in Lincoln Park, Michigan. We played countless hours of sandlot baseball up at Gregory Park among other activities like ice skating, and playing on the big clay hill. Tim was special, he always giggled and laughed. Never a angry moment in all the time we spent together. Just fun days every day. He never had a bad word to say about anyone or anything. I only regret that we didn't spend more time together, but I was a little older than Timmy, so I strayed from the neighborhood as teens do. After returning from Vietnam we chatted and found out that we were both in Vietnam in the Big Red 1. Tim the Infantry and me in artillery. We concluded that we were in one NDP in the boonies at the same time, but never knew it. Surely wished we would have known it then. I felt so bad that Tim's life was limited or hindered from him being exposed to Agent Orange and giving him the Parkinson Disease. Surely a tragedy. Agent Orange has affected most of us who were there, and in so many ways. 30 years of fighting that and his personality still was a joy to witness and be part of. I'm so happy and proud of Tim going to be at rest in Arlington Cemetery, where he wanted to be. RIP Timmy, my brother.
