Timothy Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 6, 2025.
Timothy Paul "Yogi" Hughes, born in Lindenhurst, NY, on September 12, 1954, passed away peacefully in his sleep in his home in Dripping Springs, TX, on October 31st, 2025.

Tim's passing is mourned by all who knew him, but especially by his family. His devoted wife of 47 years, Joan Young Hughes. His dear sister, Tedi Hughes, and her husband, John Schwagerl. His cherished daughter, Justine Hughes, and her husband, Bradley Sisson. His beloved grandson, Teddy Hughes. Tim was preceded in death by his son, Ted Hughes.

His father passed away when he was just 16 years old, leaving behind his mother and four sisters. He worked to support them while completing his education. Tim earned a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College, City University of New York, in 1976 and, while serving as a naval aviator, an MBA from Webster University in 1980. He graduated from basic school in 1977 and was ordered to flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator. Tim served in the military until 1996, where he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and during his years of service, he was deployed to the Persian Gulf for ground operations during Operation Desert Storm as well as in support of Operation Sea Angel in Bangladesh. Other deployments included Operations Southern Watch in Iraq and Continue Hope in Somalia. He logged over 4000 hours of flight hours in tactical jet aircraft and 120 carrier landings. Other personal decorations include the Air Medal with one strike flight award, the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Tim was also a pilot for FedEx from 1996 to 2015, where he achieved the rank of Captain.

Tim had a lifelong passion for aviation, which he dedicated much of his life to. He loved being on the water, whether it was boating, sailing, or fishing (especially with his son and grandson). He was a talented chef, with a passion for trying (and successfully recreating) numerous recipes and dishes he came across in his many adventures. And an avid student of history.

His legacy is one marked by dedication, honor, and boundless love for his family and country.

In memory of Tim, we invite you to honor his passion for Fireside Chat Support Network with a contribution in lieu of flowers. Fireside Chat Support Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Dripping Springs, Texas, dedicated to supporting veterans, first responders, and their families through meaningful community gatherings and service
