Joseph Toai Duc Bui, known affectionately as Toai by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023, at the age of 77 in Anaheim, California, after a valiant 7-month battle with stomach cancer. Born on July 6, 1946, in Hai Duong, Vietnam to Lanh Duc Bui and Kien Thi Nguyen, Toai's journey was marked by courage, resilience, and love to his family and friends.
Toai served in the Republic of Viet-Nam Armed Forces as a Ranger with the 38th Ranger Battalion based out of Saigon, Vietnam. Unbeknownst to his family, he became a POW for about a year before he was released in 1972.
In 1975, he fled to the USA after the fall of Saigon for better opportunities. Shortly after that he started his family in North Carolina before settling down in Orange County, CA where he worked as a gifted software engineer until he retired from the industry.
Toai is survived by his ex-wife, Minhthu Bui, his children Steve, Diana, and Christine Bui, and his grandchildren Logan and Brody Bui. His happiness was extended in his retired life when he returned to Vietnam and found his partner Mai Nuong Nguyen. He enjoyed going to the parks and the pool daily to exercise, enjoyed eating Vietnamese cuisine, riding his moped, and traveling with his partner.
The memory of Joseph Toai Duc Bui will be treasured and kept alive in the stories told and the memories shared by those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of his family, friends, and all who cherished him.
