Todd Curtis Obituary

Todd Curtis

July 30, 1966 ~ March 18, 2023

Well, if you're reading this, my grand adventure has come to an end, albeit about two decades too early, in my honest opinion.

I was born in Salt Lake City to Gary and Deanne Curtis and underwent surgery a few hours later to deal with the effects of spina bifida. While the doctors weren't all that positive about what life would hold for me, mom and dad vowed to make the best of it. After a few months, it was apparent that I had movement in my legs, and I underwent several surgeries over the next several years to give me as much mobility as possible.

During that time, mom and dad were told that if they wanted a normal child to raise him like one. If they wanted to have a handicapped child to raise him like one. I crawled at 7 or 8 months. I walked at 13 months (while wearing braces that weighed at least half of what I did). I learned to ride a bike. I learned to swim. I took scuba lessons. I mowed my own lawn. I hiked across the world. So much for being handicapped.

When I was 4, mom, dad and I moved to Copperton and were soon joined by my little brothers Andy and Aaron. Copperton at that time was something akin to "Leave It to Beaver" – an idyllic place where lifelong friendships were formed. I was active in church activities, including Scouting, and earned my Eagle and Silver Palm.

I graduated from Bingham High School in 1984 and attended the College of Eastern Utah in Price on a journalism scholarship. It was there that I found my calling in life as a journalist, serving on the staff of The Eagle – the school newspaper – first as a reporter and then as editor.

It was also there that I was recruited for speech team, where I learned to control my big mouth, think quickly on my feet and form (mostly) coherent sentences.

After graduating from CEU with an associate degree, I attended the University of Utah to finish up my bachelor's degree in journalism. While at the U., I was a reporter at The Chronicle, where I covered what many considered the boring stuff – the administration, the student Senate, state government and the Utah Legislature. It was during this time that I learned to dig through scads of information and formulate probing and thoughtful questions, skills I used the rest of my life.

In 1987, I was given a distinguished alumni award from CEU in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

While at the U., I got a part-time job compiling sports statistics for the Deseret News, and after graduating, I was hired full time as a copy editor. During my nearly 36 years at the paper, I was a copy editor, wire editor, assistant feature editor and then finally a copy editor again, serving as copy chief. While at the Deseret News I forged deep and binding friendships with some of the best people in the world. We laughed together, cried together, swore together and worked our behinds off to put out the best product we could. Looking back, I think we succeeded, thank you very much.

And last year, my colleagues at the Deseret News and other news organizations across the state gave me the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists' Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor for which I was deeply humbled.

When I was 25, I cut the apron strings and moved to my little house just south of Liberty Park, a neighborhood that reminded me of Copperton in so many ways. And it was while living there that I befriended -- and was befriended by -- so many wonderful people who opened my eyes to all the world has to offer – beer and traveling, to name two.

And it was with those friends that I explored the globe: Canada, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Germany, Poland, England, Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur. (My two favorite memories? Seeing Pope John Paul II ordain cardinals and hiking the Cinque Terre.)

When I wasn't traveling or at the Deseret News, you could find me puttering in the yard, working on the New York Times crossword puzzle or sitting on the patio and sharing good food (and a beer or cocktail) with incredible friends.

I would like to thank Dr. Scott Samuelson and his team at the Utah Cancer Specialists for their care over the past year. I would also like to thank the staff at Elevation Hospice, especially my nurse Rae.

Survived by my parents, brothers Andy (Suzan), Aaron (Hollie), Nephew Andrew Evan, Nieces Abigail and Olivia.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Primary Children's Hospital or charity of your choice.

Todd was a generous soul - one of the most generous people I´ve met. He was generous with his time, his talents, his compliments, his love and everything he had. He loved pleasing and serving others. He always gave the extra effort to make something, or someone, better. He was a great example to me and I will truly miss him.

without a smile on his face. In reading this obituary he seemed to have lived a very full and exceptional life.

My heart breaks to hear of Todd's passing. Reading his obituary made me wish we had kept in better touch over the years. The last time we spoke was at Shane Fullmer's viewing. Todd and I were kindred spirits! I'll always cherish our conversations. As I look back, they were pretty deep for high school students. Some of our best talks were in the halls of Bingham High School. We had much fun in yearbook class, too. Love you, Todd

I have had the privilege of working with Todd from our college days at the Chronicle, through our days of passing in the hallway at KSL and Deseret News. He was always kind with a quick smile, and willing to share his expertise with "Todd's Two Tip Tuesdays." I'm sure we on the broadcast side were the bain of his existence. I loved to hear his voice and sarcasm come through in his obituary. We will miss his enthusiasm!

Andy and family,

This is so beautiful written and Todd's voice comes through loud and clear. As I read the description of Todd's early years, I realized 'Oh, yeah, Todd had a disability" but that is never how I thought of him and this chronicle of his life proves it never got in his way. He was a fine copy editor and I'm glad his many years of service to journalism were recognized. And how he lived! Todd set an example for us in so many ways, in life and now in his passing. My condolences to Todd's family.

As wife of Chris Hicks who worked with Todd at the Deseret News, I remember knowing Todd as a most happy and generous personality. For a number of years he was always ever agreeable to letting me and my children park our cars in his driveway during the 24th of July Parade when no other parking was close by. I hope I'm numbered as one of your friends, Todd.

Todd´s enthusiasm for life rubbed off on everyone at the DNews. He was indomitable. I loved hearing about his trips and cars. He also saved me from myself more times than I can remember, correcting a glaring mistake I´d written before the world could lay eyes on it. And never making a fuss about it. A great copy editor is like a great referee - nobody even notices the best ones. Todd was as good as they come. RIP my friend.

My heart is is feeling so much sadness. Words can not express how I feel. Todd was such an amazing person and overcame so much. He was an inspiration to all that knew him. I was lucky enough to know him since he was 4 years old since we lived next door. I love him and his brothers like they were part of my family. I wish I could of seen more of Todd after he moved out of Copperton. Todd was called home too soon. I have to believe there is a plan in place. He will be missed and will always be in my heart.

I will miss Todd´s easy going and friendly personality.
I had the privilege of working for Todd on his yard, building a covered paver patio, pathways and landscaping.
Todd always treated my crew and I with kindness and respect, had such a positive attitude and was one of my all time favorite clients.
He was very creative and brought several great ideas to the design process, decorated his back patio beautifully! And kept a really nice yard.
He was so gracious about having his patio dialed in and set up and said it was a haven for he and his friends to get together.
I always appreciated his direct communication, he knew what he liked and he knew how to express that in a way which was effortless and comfortable.
He was always welcoming and cared about others.
Even on days when he wasn´t feeling great, he took the time to genuinely ask "how are you, tell me how you´ve been and what you´ve been up to".
He was a great conversationalist.
He knew how to make others feel important, to feel respected and cared about.
I admired his tenacity, his social intelligence and ability to connect with others on a meaningful level.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have been acquainted with him.
He left a positive impression.
My crew and I will always remember Todd and how incredibly cool he was to us.
Sincerely,
Anthony Davis

I was saddened to read this, but then as Todd's upbeat voice came through it was also warmly nostalgic. I always admired Todd's work ethic, tenacity and sense of humor as we worked closely together for a number of years at the Deseret News. And he's right, his final journey came at least 20 years too soon. Rest in peace, my friend.

Wow, Todd!
Amazing how much adventurous living you were able to do, plus do so amazing at the Deseret News!
Well done, Sir!
P.S. I remember seeing your home in Copperton, just down from my grandparents! And then you were so excited to have your own little place and a garden, too! Super!
Well, see you down the road!
