Tom Loftus, born February 13, 1941, was the eldest of six children of Madeleine and David Loftus. Raised on Detroit's west side, he graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School. Tom served in the United States Army, initially in the reserves and later during the Bay of Pigs Cuban Crisis, before receiving an honorable discharge in 1962. He met his beloved wife, Marti, in 1963, and they married in June 1964.
Tom enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career as an engineer with General Motors, retiring in 2000. He particularly valued his time in the Saturn division, where he built lasting friendships with both line workers and engineering staff, believing that these relationships were key to creating exceptional cars.
At the age of 43, Tom earned a bachelor's degree from Oakland University. His dedication to his studies was recognized by a local newspaper article that celebrated his perseverance and role model status for his family and community.
Family was Tom's greatest joy. He cherished time spent at family cottages, first on Big Long Lake in Indiana and later in Canadian Lakes, Michigan. He loved fishing, always in search of "the big one," and took pride in teaching his children the same. In retirement, Tom and Marti enjoyed winters in Bonita Beach, Florida, where they continued to nurture friendships made over the previous twenty years.
Tom was a devoted husband to Martha "Marti" Loftus for 58 years and a loving father to Tom Loftus, Jr. (Cindy), Jeffrey Loftus, and Katie Buchler. He was a caring grandfather to Thomas, Drew, Luke, Oliver, and Lily. He is also survived by his siblings: Bob Loftus (Nancy), Gayle McEachern (the late Lee), Patti Mihalko (Larry), and Joe Loftus (the late Kathy), and brother-in-law: Brian Brush, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He is proceeded in death by his oldest sister, Carol Brush.
Tom was always engaged in remodeling his cottages, finding joy in the hard work and commitment it entailed. For him, it was forever fun.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 10 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 280 E Square Lake Rd, Troy, with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM.
Interment Friday August 9, 2023 9:30 AM at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd, Holly.
Memorial tributes may be made to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen or the Alzheimer's Association.
