Thomas 'Tom' Jack Mason of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on June 16 at his home in Huntsville. A funeral service will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home at 2320 Bob Wallace Avenue SW in Huntsville on Saturday June 21, with visitation beginning at 2:30 and memorial service at 3:30 on that date. Interment will follow at the Mason family burial site in McClellanville, SC.
Tom was born in Starkville, MS to Thomas David and Tyffany Burns Mason on December 19, 1983. His family moved to Germantown, TN when he was 8, and he graduated from Houston High School there in 2002. He went on to earn a degree in software engineering at Mississippi State University in 2007. After graduation he worked as a software engineer in Huntsville and rose to the position of Sustainment Engineer for SAIC in Huntsville. He loved his work, and he was proud to be involved in projects that he considered to be important and significant. He loved music and was an active member of the Houston High School band, playing the alto saxophone. He was also an accomplished guitarist and played bass guitar in the Houston High Jazz Band. He enjoyed volunteering in organizations such as children's soccer leagues, serving at various times as a coach and a referee. Early in his career in Huntsville, he worked in a volunteer organization that built wheelchair ramps in the homes of people who needed them. He volunteered often with Greenpower USA at various events and assisted the organization in other ways.
Tom is survived by his parents, David and Tyffany Mason; his brother, Bennett Mason, of Denton, Texas; and by his two children, Declan and Hannah Mason, of Huntsville, Alabama.
Memorial donations may be made to the Greenpower USA Foundation, PO Box 4087, Huntsville, AL 35815, (www.greenpowerusa.net [email protected]), a nonprofit that advances the understanding of STEM topics and inspires innovation in young people through the immersive experience of designing, building, and racing electric-powered vehicles.

Tom was an amazing person who volunteered over a decade of his time and service to AYSO Region 498 Madison. Tom's roles ranged from Safety Director, Webmaster, Equipment Coordinator and of course Referee. It was refereeing where I learned the most from him. Tom had a tendency to approach soccer games by addressing parents prior to kickoff. He would explain how we are all here to ensure the kids have a fun and safe time and how he'd make it all as fair as possible. He was an asset to the 498 Board, the young Referees, and the soccer community will truly miss his presence.
