Tomas Calavera Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DW Brooks Funeral Home on Dec. 28, 2024.
Tomas D. Calavera Jr., known to his friends and loved ones as Keola, passed away tragically on December 23, 2024, in San Antonio, TX. Born on January 31, 1994, in the beautiful city of Honolulu, HI, Keola was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew him. His sudden departure at the age of 30 has left a void in the hearts of his family and friends that can never be filled.
Keola was a proud veteran of the United States Army. His service from 2013 to 2020 as a Staff Sergeant and 19D Cavalry Scout was distinguished by his unwavering commitment and bravery. The accolades he earned while on Active Duty were the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service and Overseas Service Ribbons, the Air Assault Badge, the Expert Marksmanship Badge, and the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal with Campaign Star. These all speak to his dedication to excellence. Keola's heroism extended beyond his military service, as he continued his life of service as a Texas Licensed Private Security Officer, a career he pursued with the same zeal and dedication he exhibited in uniform.
His love for his country was paralleled only by his love for his family. Kekoa (Tomas III) his cherished son, was the center of Keola's world. Keola's bond with his family was unbreakable; he was a devoted son to Tomas Sr. and Shellyanne, a protective brother to Kawika, Kanoelehua, and Leiani, and a beloved grandson to Carl and Iwalani Devincent and Donard and Martha Calavera. His numerous Aunties, Uncles, and Cousins from Hawaii to Texas will forever cherish their memories of Keola's generous spirit and heartfelt laughter.
Education was a journey Keola was still navigating, as he was enrolled in college at the time of his passing. His thirst for knowledge and self-improvement was an inspiration to his peers and professors alike. Keola's educational pursuits were an extension of his commitment to personal growth and his desire to make a meaningful contribution to society.
Those who were fortunate enough to cross paths with Keola knew him as a man of incredible humor, boundless love, and unparalleled selflessness. His hobbies reflected his zest for life; he enjoyed spending quality time with his son, pushing his limits at the gym, and sharing moments of camaraderie with friends with either online gaming or perfecting his skills at the bowling alley. Each activity was an opportunity for Keola to spread joy and create lasting memories.
As we mourn the loss of such a vibrant soul, we also remember the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Keola's spirit and the love he shared with each of us will remain in our hearts forever.
Keola's life, albeit cut tragically short, was lived with purpose and passion. His legacy will continue through the lives he touched, the service he rendered, and the laughter he shared. As we say farewell to Keola, we hold on to the essence of who he was and the impact he made, ensuring that his memory will continue to guide and inspire us every day.
The family of Tomas Calavera Jr. would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all who have shared in his life and have supported them during this difficult time. Keola will be profoundly missed, but the light of his life will perpetually shine in the memories and stories that will be told for generations to come. As we lay him to rest, we celebrate a life that, although too brief, was filled abundantly with love, courage, and laughter.

Was a funny guy no doubt, sparked up conversation with anyone, although I only knew him briefly from work, he was funny, no doubt there, and I always think of humor as life's medicine for all the calamity and turmoil in this world of men.
May his surviving family members, and especially his son know that he is at peace with the ALPHA AND OMEGA for eternity and doing his will now. As I once read on the late Eazy e's tombstone "we all loved him, but God loved him more" may all reading be safe and God bless

He is and will always be one of my favorite people in the world. My favorite memory will be our deep conversation about life. And how we joke around. And how open we were with each other. I love this man and will always cherish his memory
