Tommie Gene Thompson was born in Salado Arkansas on July 6, 1943 to Lilian and Tom Vickrey, he was the last of 21 children. His parents passed away early in his life; and at 6 years old he was adopted by his sister, Juanita and DT Thompson and lived in Sulphur OK. He graduated from Sulphur HS in 1960 and remained friends with many from his class throughout his entire life. After graduation Gene entered the US Navy. During this period of time around 1956 he met the love of his life Pam Perry and soon she became Pam Thompson. He was also like a son to his in-laws Boyd and Marguerite Perry. Gene & Pam would move to California for a short period of time and as they departed his in-laws Boyd & Marguerite Perry sent them off with tears in Boyd's eyes and their last dollars from Boyd's pockets. Once back in Oklahoma they settled into life and Gene became a salesman for Jewel T where he drove routes across the state meeting many people who became friends. Sheila was soon born and Jennifer followed 3 years later. Gene went to work for Mutual of Omaha and moved to Ardmore OK. Gene spent many years with Mutual of Omaha, becoming District Manager and running a full office of agents; many of whom he remained friends with all his life. Once he retired from Mutual of Omaha and his girls were adults; Gene and Pam moved to Lake Texoma and built a home that was filled with love, lake life and open doors for all the children and adults they had become friends with through church and life. Gene was an avid fisherman and golfer and lead the men's Golf Association at Chickasaw Pointe and Lake Texoma Golf Course for many years. He was a fixture on the course. He even had the chance to save a friend's life on the golf course when he had a heart attack and they became life long friends. Gene was a devout Christian who loved to read his Bible, attend worship, lead prayers and communion and nurture those in need in any congregation he attended. He was a life long member of the Churches of Christ. He prayed and lead classes from many a pulpit. Gene lead the most beautiful prayers you could ever hear. If you sat in his classes; you knew he had a gift with God's word. As they began to have grandchildren enter their life; they returned closer to the city and established a home in Blanchard. Gene was active at the Blanchard COC and an active member of the Purcell Men's Golf Association for the last 11 years, where he made many wonderful friends and sisters and brothers in Christ. Gene loved his family deeply. He was so proud of his girls and married to his wife Pam for 60 wonderful years. He always took the time for a friend or family member and anyone who had the honor of knowing him can attest that he was an honorable, intelligent, funny, happy and loving man. He helped those in need any chance he could, he often gave donuts to business he frequented around town, he would even stop and give a coffee and donuts to the police officer on patrol in Dibble as he passed through town headed to the golf course. The sparkle in his eye was his family. His wife, his children, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Someone once said "please ask Gene to pray for me because it seems like he has a direct line to God". A good and faithful servant of God, Tommie Gene Thompson, left this earth January 10, 2025 in one of his favorite places, South Texas. His life, his impact and his inspiration will live on forever in the hearts of all those privileged enough to have known him. A life well lived and a man well loved. Go fly high upon the mountain.
