Tom Merten, 76, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1st, 2025 in The Woodlands, Texas. Born November 18, 1948 in Houston, Texas to Bennie and Elsie Merten. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle, loving father, husband, brother, son and "Grandad" to his grandchildren.
Tom served his country in the Vietnam War in the Army. During his time traveling the world in the Army he was able to enjoy his favorite hobby, surfing, at some of the most famous surfing destinations.
After his time with the Army, Tom worked for the Tupperware Company alongside friends. He then went on to attend San Jacinto College where he learned the skill of piping design, which he did for the majority of his career in the petrochemical field prior to retirement. He also enjoyed hunting with his brothers and brother in law.
Tom met his beloved wife of 49 years, Donna at mutual friend's wedding. They had three daughters who gave them five grandchildren.
After his retirement Tom spent his time gardening- he had a love of roses and later tried his hand in vegetable gardening as well. He cared for his wife and helped out his daughters and grandchildren whenever there was a need. He learned to make fettucine alfredo and made it often for his daughter Lindsey and granddaughter Alex. He reconnected with some of his surf buddies and spent time in Galveston, contributing to the surf museum there.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Elsie Merten; his siblings Jeff Merten, Donald Merten, and Benny Conboy as well as his beloved wife, Donna Merten. He leaves behind his three daughters, Ashley and husband Michael, grandson's Harrison and Holden; Kimberly Franklin, grandchildren Finn and Fallon; Lindsey Merten and granddaughter Alex.
A visitation is planned for Tuesday, November 11, 2025 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Service will follow at Woodlawn at 1:00pm. Interment will follow at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery immediately following service.
