The visitation for Tommy Vames has been moved from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A Trisagion Service will immediately follow the visitation.

The funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Charlottesville with Father Gabriel Henley officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.

Tommy Pete Vames, 88, a beloved educator and cherished member of the Staunton community, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

He was born on September 17, 1937, in Staunton, to the late Peter Konstantine and Pauline Bitsanis Vames where he would later build a remarkable career dedicated to the education and betterment of countless students.

A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Tommy went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Bridgewater College and a master's degree from the University of Virginia.

Tommy’s teaching journey began at the Staunton Military Academy, where he served for fourteen years. He then briefly taught at John Lewis Middle School before returning to his high school alma mater, Robert E. Lee High School. Over the next twenty-two years, he became a well-loved and respected figure among students and faculty alike. Education was not just a profession for Tommy - it was his passion and a significant part of his life. His commitment to his students extended beyond the classroom, as he devoted summers to tutoring them at his home. Moreover, he dedicated fifteen years to the One Child At A Time (OCAT) tutoring program, further investing in the futures of young learners.

His legacy in education is underscored by the profound impact he had on the lives and future careers of many students. The cadet alumni of Staunton Military Academy held a special place for him in their hearts, often reaching out decades later to reconnect and share meals.

Tommy's interests outside of education were varied; he was an avid fan of UVA sports, enjoyed spending time outdoors, and cherished invigorating walks in the sun. He was known for his kindness, humility, and consideration for others, making a lasting impression on all who knew him. As a member of the community, Tommy was truly a special person, beloved by many and remembered for the positive influence he had on so many lives.

He was also a long-time, devoted member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Charlottesville. He loved his church and served for numerous years as its Treasurer and as a member of the Parish Council.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Anastasia "Tessie" Kessaratos Vames; his two sons, Pete Thomas Vames and Nicholas Frank Vames and his wife, Jaclyn; his grandson, Alexander Vames; his brother, Paul Pete Vames and his wife, Martha; his nephews, Geoff and Christopher Vames; his nieces, Angela Vames Sutton, Annette Stamus-Stull, Stephanie DeMaurice, and Melanie Mandros; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, James Pete Vames and his sister, Jo Anne Vames Stamus.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A Trisagion Service will immediately follow the visitation.
