Toney Lee "Bones" Smith, 70, passed away on February 5, 2026, in
Greensboro, North Carolina, the city where he was born and spent much of his life.
Born on July 9, 1955, in Greensboro to Robert Smith and Ruby Morrison, Toney grew up surrounded by family and community. He carried the values of kindness, humor, and service throughout his life-values that would define him both personally and professionally.
Toney served his country with pride in the United States Army for 20 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant First class before his retirement. His dedication to his country was matched only by his devotion to those he loved. After retiring from the Army, Toney continued to serve others in quieter but equally meaningful ways.
Known affectionately as "Bones," Toney had a gift for making people laugh. Whether it was with one of his favorite jokes-like "What do you call it when a redhead gets angry? A ginger snap"-or simply through his warm presence, he had an uncanny ability to lift spirits. Nobody remained a stranger for long around Toney; he greeted everyone with a smile and an open heart.
He found joy in simple pleasures: browsing antique stores for unique treasures to decorate his home or give as thoughtful gifts, catching the latest superhero or animated film at the theater, or sharing candy and laughter with someone who needed cheering up. These small acts of kindness were hallmarks of who he was-a man who always went the extra mile for those around him.
Toney was a pillar of strength within his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Sheila Smith; daughter Angelena Shelton; granddaughter Miracle Shelton; sisters Rose Evans and Betty Smith; and brother Rodney Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert Smith and Ruby Morrison; brother Rocky Smith; sons Jeremy and James Smith; and grandson Joseph Shelton.
Toney Lee "Bones" Smith leaves behind a legacy of laughter, compassion, and unwavering love. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 7th, 2026, at 2pm, at The Kernersville Full Gospel Mission, located at 815 Salisbury St.,
