WASHINGTON - Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush's press secretary, died Saturday of colon cancer. He was 53.
"America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," President Bush said in a statement from Camp David, where he was spending the weekend. "It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work."
Snow died at 2 a.m. at Georgetown University Hospital, according to former employer Fox News.
Snow, who served as the first host of the television news program "Fox News Sunday" from 1996 to 2003, would later say that in the Bush administration he was enjoying "the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I'm ever going to have."
Snow was working for Fox News Channel and Fox News Radio when he replaced Scott McClellan as press secretary in May 2006 during a White House shake-up. Unlike McClellan, who came to define caution and bland delivery from the White House podium, Snow was never shy about playing to the cameras.
With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster's good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts — he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses.
He served just 17 months as press secretary, a tenure interrupted by his second bout with cancer. In 2005 doctors had removed his colon and he began six months of chemotherapy. In March 2007 a cancerous growth was removed from his abdominal area and he spent five weeks recuperating before returning to the White House.
"All of us here at the White House will miss Tony, as will the millions of Americans he inspired with his brave struggle against cancer," Bush said.
Snow resigned as Bush's chief spokesman last September, citing not his health but a need to earn more than the $168,000 a year he was paid in the government post. In April, he joined CNN as a commentator.
Vice President Dick Cheney was "deeply saddened" by the news of Snow's death, his spokeswoman said.
As press secretary, Snow brought partisan zeal and the skills of a seasoned performer to the task of explaining and defending the president's policies. During daily briefings, he challenged reporters, scolded them and questioned their motives as if he were starring in a TV show broadcast live from the West Wing.
Critics suggested that Snow was turning the traditionally informational daily briefing into a personality-driven media event short on facts and long on confrontation. He was the first press secretary, by his own accounting, to travel the country raising money for Republican candidates.
Although a star in conservative politics, as a commentator he had not always been on the president's side. He once called Bush "something of an embarrassment" in conservative circles and criticized what he called Bush's "lackluster" domestic policy.
Most of Snow's career in journalism involved expressing his conservative views. After earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Davidson College in North Carolina in 1977 and studying economics and philosophy at the University of Chicago, he wrote editorials for The Greensboro (N.C.) Record, and The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk.
He was the editorial page editor of The Newport News (Va.) Daily Press and deputy editorial page editor of The Detroit News before moving to Washington in 1987 to become editorial page editor of The Washington Times.
Snow left journalism in 1991 to join the administration of the first President Bush as director of speechwriting and deputy assistant to the president for media affairs. He then rejoined the news media to write nationally syndicated columns for The Detroit News and USA Today during much of the Clinton administration.
Roger Ailes, chairman of Fox News, called Snow a "renaissance man."
Robert Anthony Snow was born June 1, 1955, in Berea, Ky., and spent his childhood in the Cincinnati area. Survivors include his wife, Jill Ellen Walker, whom he married in 1987, and three children.

For Tony...
One of the most trusted
men in America.
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

As in the case in Tim Russert, we lost a giant of a man with the untimely passing of Tony Snow. Mr. Snow was a true professional, while both in his career as a journalist as well as White Press Secretary. In addition, he was a real gentleman who confronted his illness with grace, humor and courage. While he will be missed, he will remain a source of inspiration for many.

Like Tony, I've been challenged by colorectal cancer. I am soon to be 52 years of age with a child still to raise. Like Tony I had major surgery in the early part of the winter in 2005. Also, like him I have had recurrences (April 2007 and now, again, in July 2008). So I feel a kinship with him. My heart is broken due to Tony's passing. However, he dealt with cancer with a great deal of grace. Blessings to Tony and his family. May those of us who are living with cancer remember Mr. Snow.

My heartfelt condolences to the Snow family. I worked with Tony for the last few years (freelance make-up artist) and truly admired his courage, tenacity and unbelievably positive attitude in fighting this disease. Seeing him sit in front of the cameras for hours on end, while simultaneously undergoing chemotherapy, feeling awful, yet staying positive, was remarkable.
I will always remember his happy demeanor and will miss him dearly.

Though I never met him personally, his influence was very encouraging and a great role model.

To the Snow family:
Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
As a "listener", it was such a pleasure to hear Tony (usually on Rush's show) make such cogent and convincing points, on such a wide variety of subjects. He was truly gifted.

Thank you for sharing him with us.

I first saw Mr. Snow years ago on Fox News Sunday. His knowledge, good humor and kindness was unique and should be an example to everyone! His life is a testimony that strong Christian values can be applied to all aspects of our lives, no matter what our position in life may be. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. He will be missed my countless others who, like myself, never had the pleasure of meeting him, but knew the kind of man he was by witnessing his treatment of others. And what an inspiration he was during his illness! We should all be so strong in our faith no matter what life brings. And he certainly showed us that!!
God Bless all those he loved!

My introduction to Tony Snow came when I was 13 years old. I was on a school trip to Washington DC and we got to spend the morning with the Washington press corps. Helen Spivey and other notables were on the panel, but Tony really made an impression on me. He was by far the greatest speaker, and really got us kids interested in national politics. Now, I am 32 years old, and I work as a lobbyist and also serve as a city commissioner. I still remember the remarks Tony made to my group that day, and they definitely are part of what inspired my interest in politics today.
My prayers are with you and just wanted you to know what a profound impact he had on my life.

As an avid watcher of Fox News, I came to know Tony Snow. I have followed his career at Fox, on the radio, White House, and always knew he was a wonderful man who loved God,country, and his family. I was praying that he would be with us a lot longer but the Lord wanted him Home. I am heartbroken with his loss, but he accomplished more in his life than someone twice his age. When you allow someone into your living room to bring you the news, you feel as though you know that person, so it is if I have lost a family member. All my sympathy to his wife and 3 children and to his huge extended family of friends.

Dear Family
When I first learned of Tony's illness I sent an email to him at the White House and I received the nicest reply. On July 11 I mentioned to my husband that we had not heard any news on Tony and then, of course, Saturday came. What a sad day. As I now listen to the TV and radio and they replay segments or clips of past programs to honor him, my heart is full of sorrow. While we will always have the ability to see and hear him in the media, he truly is gone from our world. What a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, friend and co-worker for those who were closest to him. Thank you for sharing him with the world. He definitely left behind a legacy rich in how to conduct one's self through life--beginning to end.

Dear Jill and kids,
I too lost my dad at a young age, I was nine and he was 57. I can remember thinking another day would never pass in my life and I would be stuck in a world of sadness forever. One day shortly afterwards my mom decided we needed to go on as that would be what our Dad would want. I pray for you all and hope you know that everything your Dad meant to you in life he still means to you, only it is different now. Someday the reunion will come and it will be wonderful and all the sorrow will be washed away.
I too look forward to one day meeting such an awe inspiring, kind and gentle man.

I first heard Tony subbing for Rush on talk radio. His voice instantly uplifted me and to this day, I can't tell you why. He just sounded so genuine. Many years later when I first saw him on TV, I knew it was that voice...and to see his smile and lovely manner was all that much better. Finally seeing him combat the press from the White House was even better. The nice guy with the steel trap mind and quick and sardonic wit. Fabulous. Tony, your fans will miss you. Tony was bright and funny even when the news wasn't all that good. But it was his honesty and willingness to say what no else would say that put him above so many others in his profession. Mrs. Snow & family:
My condolences to you. My wife, Joyce, was an ardent admirer of your husband on Fox News. She felt some comraderie with your husband because she was diagnosed with colon cancer in March 2005. Her's unfortunately was already stage 4. She died May 9th, 2006 after a courageous fight with it. I know what you've been through and what you going through now. I can tell you from experience, the Good Lord will get you through this. It is not easy being the survivor, and I wish the very best for you. Sincerely, Dan Sieverding

To Tony Snow’s Family:
Tony was one of the most memorable men I have ever had the good fortune to know – to the extent that it’s possible to know someone you’ve never met. Because of his exceptional persona, millions of us who grew to love him feel that we knew him personally, and his loss has indeed left us bereft. We grieve with you, and our broken hearts go out to you – to his family – to the people he loved most.
May Christ hold you in the palm of His hand.

My deepest sympathy for your loss. There is no man (that I can think of, and that includes my dear husband, whom I love deeply) that I have more respect and admiration for than your husband, Tony. I admired him very much and looked forward to his every word - no matter what the forum. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.
