Townsend Foster Obituary

TROY - Townsend "Tim" Foster, Jr., 94, a longtime resident of Troy, Ohio and current resident of Oro Valley, Arizona died peacefully of natural causes in Tucson, Arizona on August 6, 2025. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 6, 1931, to the late Townsend "T" Foster and the late Marjorie Porter.

Tim was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Japan. He graduated from Colgate University in 1953 with a B.A. and Cornell University in 1955 with an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree. He moved to Troy in the early 1960's and was a founding partner in 1969 of the Foster & Wannemacher law firm. This firm grew adding partners over the years into LeFevre, Foster, Wannemacher, Baer & Gearhardt and was ultimately merged with another leading law firm in Troy to form Dungan & LeFevre in 1991.

Tim had a passion for life and was embedded in his community. He was heavily involved in the Troy Skating Club and the Troy Jaycees in the 1960's and beyond. He coached youth ice hockey in the 1970's and youth soccer in its very early days in Troy as well. He was an accomplished alpine skier and the yearly ski vacations out West were cherished by his whole family. Tim also heli-skied in the Canadian Rockies for 10 years. Later in life, he traveled the world with his wife Dottie and always came back with detailed reports of their many adventures.

He loved fishing and would fish in the St. Lawrence River in upstate NY, the Pier at Fort Myer's Beach and on fishing excursions on his many Alaskan cruises. His true passion was golf. He was a long-time member and past president of the Troy Country Club and continued to golf in Arizona until the age of 92. Even in his care facility in Oro Valley, he would often hit golf balls off a makeshift mat into the desert.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Dorothy "Dottie" Foster of Oro Valley, Arizona. Also, his brother, Scott (Christa) Foster of Liverpool, New York, his daughter, Michelle "Micki" Gallagher of Elizabeth, Colorado, two sons, Drew (Elaine) Foster of Loveland, Ohio and Blair Foster of Milford, Ohio, a stepson, Patrick (Tayla Colton) Finley of Honolulu, Hawaii, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Tim was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Friedly Foster, stepmother Elizabeth "E" Smiley Foster, stepfather the Honorable David S. Porter, and son-in-law, George Gallagher.

Tim will be cremated and interred at Riverside Cemetery in Troy, Ohio. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to:
