Major Frederick Shelby Roberts Jr., a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home on August 28, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, love, and laughter. Fred, known affectionately as Freddie or Mr. Fred, was born on November 16, 1950, in Monroe, Louisiana, Fred was the cherished son of Frederick Shelby Roberts Sr. and Isabelle Hasselbeck Roberts. Fred's life was marked by dedication and resilience. After completing his studies with a Bachelor of Science from Northeast Louisiana University, he embarked on a noble career in the military. Fred was a proud veteran who served his country with honor during the Vietnam War and Desert Storm, earning three Bronze Stars for his exemplary service. His commitment to excellence and his country was a testament to his character, shaping his life and the lives of those around him. In addition to his military service, Fred found fulfillment in education after retiring from the Army. He earned his Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University in Virginia, and a Master of Library Science from East Carolina University. He taught Kindergarten for seven years, nurturing the minds of young children with kindness and patience. He later became an elementary school media specialist, where he fostered a love for reading and learning in his students for three more years. His passion for education extended beyond the classroom, as he inspired everyone he met with his great sense of humor and unwavering positive outlook on life. On May 24, 2014, Fred married the love of his life, Pamala Joy (PJ) Roberts, in a beautiful ceremony on the dock at Hammock Lake in Haines City, Florida. Their union was a celebration of love, companionship, and shared dreams, and it brought immeasurable joy to both of their lives. Fred was a devoted father to his daughter, Shelby Roberts Rowe, and her husband, Robb Rowe, and to his son, Nathan Roberts, and his wife, Ellen. He took immense pride in being a grandfather to his beloved granddaughters, Alyssa and Daisy Roberts. He shared a special bond with his family, including his sister, Claudia Long; brothers Michael Roberts and his wife Sherri, and Richard Roberts and his wife Elisa. Fred was also a beloved uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom cherished his wisdom and warmth. Fred was well-known for his great sense of humor and positive outlook on life. He found joy in the simple pleasures, whether it was fishing on a quiet afternoon, delving into science fiction novels, or passionately cheering on the Washington Capitals and engaging in lively discussions about soccer. He loved staying connected with his children through texts during games, always sharing in the excitement and camaraderie that sports bring. His laughter and spirit will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Fred's legacy will live on in the hearts of those he loved and inspired. As we remember Major Frederick Shelby Roberts Jr., we are reminded of his selfless service, his dedication to education, and the love he shared with his family and friends. We celebrate a life well lived and a spirit that will forever shine brightly in our memories. A private funeral service will be held, honoring Fred's wishes, as the family gathers to reflect on his life and legacy. He will be deeply missed but will forever remain in our hearts and memories.
