V. Kellar Obituary

V. Paul Kellar, 84, of Big Run, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois.

He was born in DuBois on July 10, 1941, a son of the late Vinton Paul Kellar, Sr. and Martha (Yohe) Kellar.

Mr. Kellar served in the United States Air Force during peacetime in the cold war from 1959-1963.

On April 18, 1959, he married the former Thelma Eileen Bowser. They enjoyed sixty-six years of marriage and raised two daughters.

Mr. Kellar worked as a science teacher in the Brockway School District, where he also coached football for many years. His influence extended far beyond academics and athletics, shaping young lives with lessons they carried well into adulthood. Mr. Kellar had great tales about teaching and his interactions with his students.

He previously enjoyed hunting, and reminiscing about the good old days at Pot Latch and the Friendly T. He was a proud lifetime member of the NRA.

He served as the past president of the Big Run Borough Council for many years. His intellect, devotion and knowledge of both the area and prior happenings in Big Run served the citizens well over the years.

In addition to his wife Thelma, he is survived by two daughters, Jenipher Kellar of Big Run and Jill (Rick) Hurd of Jefferson, Maryland; two grandchildren, Austin (Jessica) Hurd of Jefferson, Maryland and Alli (Andrew) Hubert of Point of Rocks, Maryland; five great-grandchildren, Scarlet, Payton, and Tessa Hubert, and Westin and Everett Hurd; one brother, James (Carolyn) Kellar of Punta Gorda, Florida; two sisters, Ann (Bob) Leach of Titusville and Nancy Black of Long Island, New York.

Preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jeanne McAuley.

There will be no viewing, however, friends will be received from noon until 4 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., officiated by Bob Lott. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Post 2076.

His ashes will be interred at Fairview Cemetery.

I taught with Paul for many years starting in 1978. He was my favorite colleague since we already had a connection, his dad, Vinton Keller had been my shop teacher at Reynoldsville. Paul was an excellent teacher giving kids not only lessons about science and biology but teaching them about life, I am sure there are literally thousands of now adults who remember their time in his classroom. His storytelling was epic and the world has lost one of the best men who ever stepped into a classroom.

I will always cherish the times we had at potlatch. The stories and great times we spent there were some of the best times of my life.

I had Mr. Keller for seventh grade science at North St. I remember one day it was first period and we were having a test and as he was passing out the test I got sick on my desk and he says well you didn´t even see the test yet Miss Hetrick.. of course I had to go to the nurses office and they called my mom to come and get me. Not sure why I remember that, but it´s something that I still remember and laugh about.
Sorry for your loss.

To the Keller family,

I am sorry for your loss. I will always remember the trip our families took together to crossed the country and back. Along with all of the weekends spent boating and camping. I think of Paul everytime I see a longhorn cow and laugh about how he would stop and run up to the fence to get photos of them. Paul was a one of a kind person and I am sorry for your loss.
