With deep sorrow and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Valerie Marie Powell-Cook, who departed this life on October 4, 2025, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, surrounded by loved ones, and born August 28, 1958, to Richard Powell, Sr., and Helen Cannon Steward.
Valerie was a devoted mother, a beloved sister, a proud grandmother, and a loyal friend. Her warmth, strength, and compassion touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Valerie was the kind of person who made you feel seen, heard, and loved-a rare light whose presence brought comfort and joy to the community. A minister of the Gospel, she was very passionate concerning the Word of God.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Cook; beloved son, Jerome Cook; mother, Helen Cannon Steward; and stepfather, Percy Steward, as well as her father, Richard, and stepmother, Eula Powell.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Tanya Cook; two brothers, Richard Powell Jr (Celestine) and Justin Powell (Vanessa); two sisters, Jeana Finley and Tiffany Powell; and six grandchildren, Breyauna, Arneisa, Jalen, Keiera, Jamaza, and LaJavian; seven great-grandchildren, her precious Auntie Melba Powell Lawrence, and Uncle Celet Powell, who were the joy of her life. She also leaves behind many dear friends and loved ones whose lives she deeply touched.
Valerie's kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
