On December 29, 1953, Van Ora was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, a joyful addition to his family. Known affectionately by his CB handles "Mean Machine" and "Twelve Eleven," Van's nicknames reflected his love for the open road and his lifelong passion for truck driving.
Van grew up in El Dorado, where he enjoyed an active childhood filled with fishing, hunting, and swimming, earning the reputation that he could "swim like a fish." He attended Watson Elementary, Washington Junior High, and El Dorado High School before completing his education at Oil Belt Vocational Technical School.
A hardworking and friendly man, Van began his career by helping at his grandmother, Mary Sue LeGrande's, family store. He later became a cross-country truck driver for Ensco and went on to work for many years at Lion Oil Chemical Company until his health began to fail.
From an early age, Van was rooted in faith. He joined First Baptist Church Cordell, where he remained a devoted member throughout his life. He took great pride in serving his church family and was well known for driving the church van with joy and dedication.
Van's easygoing nature, strong work ethic, and love for people will forever be remembered. He had a kind heart, a warm smile, and a natural ability to make everyone feel welcome. Whether sharing stories, lending a helping hand, or spending time with family and friends, Van brought light and laughter to every moment.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, church family, and all who were blessed to know him. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit, humor, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Van was preceded in death by his parents, Ora Mae and Isaac L. Greer, and John T. Sr. and Terrell Smith, along with many other beloved family members. He was also preceded in death by his son, Spunky; daughter, Shymecha; sisters, Cheryl Sue and Denyse; brother, Jimmie Ray; and niece, Chelsea. There is no doubt that Van was welcomed into heaven with open arms by those who went before him.
His legacy continues through his loving children, daughters LaTara (Andre) and Kandace, and his son Van O. Jr.; his grandchildren, Tre'Ajani, Tiara, Anaya, Tajah, Khamari, and Kyce; and his great-grandchildren Aloria and Cyrus. He is also survived by his siblings: Julian D. Edmondson, Sharman Buggs (Bill), Isaac Greer (Sherita), John T. Smith Jr., Gary Smith (Mary), Greg Smith (Sheila), Rhonda McHenry (Rodney), Shirley Beavers, his brother-in-law, Earl Alexander, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Alfriza Moore. Van's memory will also live on through a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless relatives and friends who loved him dearly.
