Vander was born at New Hanover County Hospital in Wilmington, NC. He was a resident of Navassa, NC for many years before he moving to Ponchatoula, Louisiana where he developed a passion for higher education. Vander was well known as "Butter" by his beloved aunt, Elizabeth Joyce West and his siblings, James Llyod McKinnon Jr, Reginald Ray McKinnon, Carmen Rita McKinnon, and Velda M. Legarde Vander shared a special bond with his sister, Brenda M.Bryant Nixon and his niece, Melanie V. McKinnon.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Llyod McKinnon, Sr.; mother, Bessie B. McKinnon Jones and sister, Sharon A. McKinnon Guy.
A memorial service will be held on August 30, 2025 at the Navassa Community Center at 2:00 PM, 338 Main Street, Navassa, NC 28451.
