In Loving Memory of Velma Dell Baker Goins September 7, 1940 – June 19, 2025
Velma Dell Baker Goins, age 84, of Lufkin, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was born on September 7, 1940 in Trinity, Texas, to John Cecil Baker and Velma McGaughey Baker.
She was raised in Lufkin and graduated from Lufkin High School in 1957. It was in Lufkin she met the love of her life, Larry Goins, when he began working at the U.S. Postal Service there. They married in March of 1960 and shortly after relocated to Leesville, Louisiana, where they built a life of love, family, and service, sharing 59 years of marriage.
Upon moving to Leesville, Velma began a long and distinguished civil service career at Fort Polk. She started as a secretary and, through hard work and dedication, rose through the ranks, eventually retiring as a GS-13 Installation Budget Analyst. She was highly respected for her professionalism, integrity, and leadership.
Velma was a devoted, long-time member of East Leesville Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as the church organist for many years, often accompanying her husband Larry, who was the choir director. Together, they shared a passion for music ministry that touched many lives. She also served as a coordinator for Young at Heart activities.
In addition to her church involvement, Velma was a former member of the Pilot Club of Leesville, a service organization through which she further contributed to her community.
Family was the heart of Velma's life. She was very proud of her family and enjoyed spending time with them. As a mother, she was always supporting her children in their many projects. As a MawMaw, she could not have been prouder. She loved cheering for her grandsons in any endeavor from Tee-Ball to Varsity Football or Baseball to theatre or academics. She was their biggest fan. She loved her granddaughters and enjoyed all of the time she got to spend with them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Goins, her parents, John and Velma Baker, and her twin brother, Elmer Baker. She is survived by her children: Renita Goins Page (Paul) of Leesville, LA, John Milton Goins (Laura) of Gilmer, TX, and Kenneth Olen Goins (Trisha) of Grapevine, TX.
Her grandchildren: Justin Casey Goins, Anacoco; Clint Matthew Goins (Allie) of DeRidder, Matthew Davis (Laura) of Swannanoa, NC, Ashley Patricia Goins, and Addison Mackenzie Goins of Grapevine, TX.
She also leaves behind to cherish her memory, her brother Cecil Baker (Angie) and her sister Linda Mount, both of Lufkin, TX and a host of nieces and nephews and many longtime friends.
A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM on Sunday, June 22, 2025 and from 9:00 until time of service on Monday, June 23, 2025 at East Leesville Baptist Church. The service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 23, 2025 at East Leesville Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Tommy Kiker and Rev. Sammy Morrow with burial to follow in the Leesville Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Ken Goins, John Goins, Justin Goins, Paul Page, Matthew Davis, and Cecil Baker.
