Velma Behrens Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations - La Grange on Oct. 1, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Velma Jean Behrens, affectionately known as Granny, went to her eternal home on September 30, 2025. Born on July 23, 1933, in Thorndale, Texas, to H. P. and Sidonia Weiser. Velma Jean's life was a testament to the virtues of faith, love, and spirited joy. She departed this world peacefully due to natural causes in La Grange, Texas, surrounded by the love of her family.

Granny's journey began in the heart of Texas, where her roots ran as deep as the pecan trees that dot the landscape. She was a beacon of light in the lives of her family, including her late beloved husband, Glenn Behrens, and their son, Marcus Behrens and his wife, Debbie. Velma Jean's legacy continued to flourish through her three grandchildren: Daniel Behrens and his wife, Emily; Chris Behrens; and Amanda Berryhill and her husband, Joseph. Her four great-grandchildren, Walker, Kameron, Malachi, and Hailey Behrens, brought her immeasurable joy.

Velma Jean's brother, Kenneth Weiser and his wife, Ruby, along with her sister, Carolyn Oltmann and her husband, Bobby, shared in the close-knit tapestry of her life. She was a cherished aunt to her niece, Anita Andrews, and to her nephews, Paul, John, and Mark Weiser, and Keith, Craig, and Gary Oltmann. Velma was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Clifton Behrens, and daughter-in-law, Cindy Behrens. Her parents, H. P. and Sidonia Weiser, in-laws, Martin and Elenora Behrens.

A proud graduate of Giddings High School, Velma Jean dedicated her professional life to caring for others as a nurse. She worked alongside Dr. Boelsche, Dr. Williams, Dr. Zatopek, and Dr. Paine, providing comfort and healing to countless individuals. Her compassionate service reflected her Christian faith, which was the cornerstone of her existence.

Velma Jean's interests were as rich and varied as her loving spirit. She found solace in her garden, where she cultivated not only flowers and vegetables but also the seeds of kindness and generosity. Her hands were rarely still, as she delighted in canning vegetables, cheering on her grandchildren at their events, and rooting for her favorite sports teams, the Houston Astros and the Dallas Cowboys. Her homemade sweet goodies, noodles, BBQ sauce, and chili were legendary, and her kitchen was a hub of warmth and delicious aromas.

Described as faith-filled, loving, and spirited, Velma Jean embodied the words of Scripture, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:23) and "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7).

As we celebrate Velma Jean's journey home, we are comforted by the knowledge that her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. Her unwavering faith and the love she shared will continue to inspire and guide us. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories and laughter of her family, a testament to a life well-lived and a soul well-loved.

A special thank you for the spiritual care provided by Pastor Jason Kaspar and the friends at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. For the patience and compassionate care provided to Granny by the staff at Monument Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, La Grange Family Health Center, and Hospice Brazos Valley.
