Velma Jean Burgess, born Thompson, aged 65, of Inola, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025. She was a beacon of kindness and positivity, celebrated for her generous spirit and thoughtful nature. Despite facing the challenges of paralysis, Velma approached life with a remarkable brightness and an unwavering faith, looking forward to her eternal home in Heaven.
Born on May 9, 1960, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Velma cherished her connections with family and friends. Her loving disposition allowed her to touch the lives of many, often engaging in heartfelt conversations that brightened the days of those she encountered. A fondness for Dr. Pepper was one of her many endearing qualities, serving as a testament to her warm and approachable personality.
Velma is survived by her parents, Walter and Hilda (Day) Thompson; her daughter Audra Lyon of Collinsville, OK; sisters Donna Turner of Inola, OK, and Pam Landrum and husband Ben of Owasso, OK; along with her beloved grandchildren, Queenie Fitzer, Ashlie Lyon, and Tyson Lyon; and one great grandchild, Jensen Lyon. She is also survived by her nephew, William Turner of Inola, Ok.
She is preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents, as well as numerous aunts and uncles, who were surely waiting with open arms to welcome her home.
Velma will be remembered not only for her vibrant personality but also for the profound impact she had on those around her. Her legacy of compassion, forgiveness, and joy will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services for Velma will take place at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at the Calvary Baptist Church, in Inola . Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Inola. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 24, 2025, at Shipman's Funeral Home in Pryor.
