Velma Marie (Furbee) Scurlock, age 89, of Lore City, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025 at Altercare Summit Acres in Caldwell under the care of Absolute Hospice following a brief illness.
She was born on August 21, 1935 in Clarksburg WV to the late Denzil and Laura (Kelley) Furbee. She married Ronald E. Scurlock on August 9, 1957.
Velma and her husband, Ronald E., were well-known for owning and operating the 265 Carry Out for many years. She was a homemaker and made many beautiful cakes and wedding cakes for many. She was a fantastic cook and everyone especially looked forward to her delicious potato soup and nut rolls when she made them.
Velma was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who will be missed dearly.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald E. Scurlock; her brothers, William, Edward, Gerald, and Denzil; her sister, Patricia, and infant sister, Jane; and her in-laws, Herbert and Wilda Scurlock.
Velma is survived by her sons, David (Valerie) Scurlock and Gregory (Melanie) Scurlock; her brothers, James Furbee and Rick (Denise) Furbee; her grandchildren, Matthew Scurlock (Brandi Fabian), Kaleigh (Joshua) Martin, Kyle (Lisa) Scurlock, Tyler Scurlock, Heather Watkins, Jessica (Joe) Hinson, and Ashley McElfresh; and her great-grandchildren, Brinley Scurlock, Maisey Martin, Braylee Pethtel, Eastin Scurlock, Ella Watkins, Dakota Hinson, Taylor Hinson, and Cooper McElfresh. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Christine Duttlinger. She will be missed by her special furry grandpup, Gus.
Visitation will be held Monday (June 2, 2025) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Evan. Mark Beros officiating.
Burial will be at Senecaville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Velma's name be made to Absolute Hospice, 39 Summit Court – Suite 150, Caldwell OH 43724.
