Vera Acrey Obituary

Vera C. Acrey was born in New Waverly, Texas, April 8, 1935, to parents, Harvey L. Cotton and Clarreed Pursley Cotton. She passed away December 31, 2025, in Conroe, Texas, after a long journey with dementia and complications from a stroke in 2022.

Vera's life can be best encapsulated by five words: Family, Friends, Fun, Music and Dancing. During her 90 years with us, she experienced an abundance of each.

Vera lived in New Waverly until 1951and attended Conroe High School until she graduated in 1953. She became a life-time member of First Baptist Church in Conroe and loved singing in the choir, going to Sunday School and attending services. She took piano lessons as a child and later played for the Rebekah Lodge and Eastern Star.

She met Robert (Bobby) H. Acrey and instantly knew she had met the man with whom she wanted to build her life and begin a family. They married November 12, 1953, and continued to live in Conroe. Vera and Bobby maintained a loving and supportive marriage of almost 58 years before Bobby's death in March 2011. Together, they raised two children. Regina, born in 1956 and Robert, Jr. in 1960. The crowning glory for them was the birth of their only grandchild, Kameron Sutton, then eventually the only great grandchild, Leila Sutton.

Vera cherished her friendships, developing them at each stage of her life. Melba Rose and Corlene Edwards were her very special friends of many, many years during heart-felt times as well as sorrow. Vera, considered by many, was a social butterfly and never met a stranger. She was always considered the life of the party. She delighted in every opportunity for fun. She loved to host any kind of celebration, travel, even if just down the road or across the United States with her beloved.

Vera began working in Conroe, in 1952, while still in high school. She worked at Conroe Telephone Company as a switchboard operator and eventually retired after 35 years.

She is preceded in death by husband, Robert H. Acrey, Son, Robert Acrey, Jr, parents Harvey L. Cotton and Clarreed Chandler, her brother, Harvey Cotton, Jr, sister, Shirley J. Lunsford-Ruthven. She is survived by her daughter, Regina Pressler, Granddaughter Kameron L Sutton and husband Scott, Great-granddaughter, Leila Sutton, Brother Eddy Cotton and wife Lisa. She is also leaving behind numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Also, many special thanks for the kind and caring staff at Village Care Homes as well as Hope Beyond Hospice.

Until the very end of her days, she was a sweet, loving and kind soul that will be sadly missed but forever in our hearts.

Funeral Service for Vera will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at McNutt Funeral Home located at 1703 Porter Rd, Conroe, Tx 77301 with burial to follow at Garden Park Cemetery.
