Vera Cox Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory - Bartlesville on May 15, 2024.
Vera Faye Cox age 93, a resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, departed this life to be with her Savior Jesus Christ, on May 14, 2024 at 2:48AM surrounded by her family.
Vera was born at home on February 13, 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the seventh among thirteen children born to her parents, Carl Kirby Brantley and Pearl May (Shultz) Brantley. She attended school in Ft. Worth, Texas. When she was twelve years of age her father left home never to return. At fifteen years of age Vera began working to help support the family. She was employed as a salesclerk in Department stores until her marriage February 18, 1950, to Thomas (Tom) Cox. She was a faithful wife to her husband and the four children born to this union. They were married 74 years.
Vera's first job was at the Montgomery Ward Department Store Ft. Worth Texas in the catalog department. She actually worked on roller skates. She tried to teach Tom to skate, but it never happened as he was too clumsy. She had to hold him up, something she continued to do throughout their marriage, in every situation.
Vera did not marry a Preacher. Her husband Tom surrendered to the Ministry in 1954. She became a model pastor's wife as well as a mother. It required a lot of sacrifice on her part during the years of having her husband in school and later as a pastor.
Beginning in 1956 they served churches in three states, Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Tom also served as Director of Missions for the Washington Osage Baptist Association consisting of thirty-six churches in Washington, Osage & Nowata counties. Vera was loved in each of the seven Churches they served and throughout the association. Her husband said, " when we would move from one church to another the people would miss Vera more than they did me."
After the children were grown, Vera reentered the work force working at department stores. Many remember the years she worked at the former Vandevers Department Store in Bartlesville in the office. Her last position outside of the home was at the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville where she served as receptionist for eight years. She was always kind to those who would call or came by her office where she worked. She dearly loved this job, with the exception of being a wife and mother, more than any other. She also worked for the County Election Board for several years during elections. She is remembered as one who viewed any assignment as a ministry.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Pearl Brantley; four brothers, five sisters, and a precious Granddaughter Deidre (Laffoon) Cox,
She is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, Tom Cox; daughter, Kay McMillen (Jimmy); son, Rick Cox (Beverly); son, Paul Cox (Denise Laffoon); son, Walter Cox; grandchildren, Noah McClary, Emily McClary, Whitney Cox, Courtney Laffoon Cox, Kevin Cox, and April Cox Kelley (Scott); great grandchildren, Joshua Johnson, Jordyn Rutherford, Gage Haney, William Littles, Colton Hall, Jaxon Kelley, and Kynlee Kelley; and one great-great grandchild, Elliana Day-Johnson.
A Memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville May 20, 2024, at
2: 00PM.Internment will be at the Ramona Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church P. 0. 1080 Bartlesville or a ministry of choice.
