Verna A. Schumacher, age 88 of Oshkosh, passed away on October 3, 2025 at The Residence of Oshkosh. She was born on July 7, 1937 to the late John and Lucille Gustmiedl.
She first married Donald Freeman, with whom she raised two sons. Later in life, she married Donald Schumacher, who passed just a month before her on September 6, 2025.
Verna dedicated much of her life to working as a caretaker in various nursing facilities, where she touched many lives with her kindness and compassion. She had a flair for finding treasures at rummage sales, had a heart full of love for her pets (especially her German Shepherd), and was known for her beautiful flower gardens. Christmas was a particularly magical time for her, and she cherished the opportunity to gather with family and friends during the holiday season.
Verna is survived by her son, Steven Freeman; her grandchildren, Derek and Kayleen Freeman; and her sister, Juleen (Jim) Groff; stepson, Don (Annette) Schumacher. She is further survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald Schumacher, her son Gerald “Jerry” Freeman, and her brothers Arlin and Lloyd Gustmiedl.
A private service will take place at Lake View Memorial Park to celebrate Verna's life.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible staff at The Residence of Oshkosh- Building One, especially nurse Lisa, as well as to Heartland Hospice, particularly Deb and Chaplain Leslie. To all the countless others who assisted Verna, your care and compassion were deeply appreciated.
