Verna Stephens Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kalkaska Funeral & Cremation Services on Dec. 20, 2025.
Verna Dee Stephens, 82, of Kalkaska, ended her long battle with Alzheimer's Dementia on December 19, 2025. She was born on July 30,1943 in Pontiac, Michigan to the late Vernon and Naomi (McLain) Frye. She spent the majority of her life in Kalkaska with her husband of 51 years, James "Bill" Stephens. Verna led a quiet life, marked not by loud achievements, but by steady love and gentle talent. A humble, self-taught painter, she found joy in creating new works of art, never seeking praise, but simply sharing them with friends. She also crocheted and knitted countless pieces, each one a small act of care and patience. You could often find Verna out riding her bike or taking small walks. She was content in life's ordinary tasks. Above all else, Verna was devoted to her family. There was nothing she wouldn't do for them, no sacrifice too great, no request met without pure kindness. Her love was constant. Her presence was reassuring. Her heart was endlessly generous. Verna will be remembered for her quiet strength and the deep, unwavering love she gave so freely. She will be forever missed by her two children Todd (Kim) Stephens and Darci (Mike) Fitch. Verna cherished her family, especially her grandchildren: Morgan (Jacob) Hersha, Alaina (Caleb VI) Horton, Mackenzie and Alison Luck. She was also blessed with three great grandchildren: Caleb Horton VII, Brynlee Horton, and Quincy Hersha. A graveside service will take place in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home.
