Vernell Marie Celestine-Webber of
Houston, TX passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 2, 2023. She was born to Lee and Wilma Celestine in
Winnie, Texas on August 5, 1967.
Marie was a devout Christian who accepted Christ at an early age as a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church where she attended school. Later she transitioned to St. Mary of the Purification Catholic Church as a member. In a quest to learn more about Jesus, she joined the Windsor Village Church family.
Marie was a proud graduate of Jack Yates High School Class of 1985 and Texas Southern University (TSU) where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. While a student at both Jack Yates High School and Texas Southern University, she served as a spirited member of the cheerleading squad. She developed an undeniable pride for both schools. A dedicated TSU alum, Marie availed herself to help new freshmen move into the dorms. Serving on both the local and national levels of the alumni association, she vocally advocated for scholarships and assistance for the students. Marie loved tailgating at TSU football and basketball games and could always be seen wearing her paraphernalia proudly, especially during Homecoming week of TSU. She loved TSU and displayed HBCU pride; often encouraging young people to attend.
Professionally, Marie worked in retail pharmacymanagement with Walgreens during college. After graduation she was a dedicate employee of American International Group, Inc. (AIG), with 19 years of service. She went on to share her corporate talents with Kelsey Seybold Clinics and other corporations.
Family was the most important thing to Marie. She loved getting family together for special occasions and holiday events, where she endeavored to do most of the cooking and planning for family reunions.
Marie never met a stranger; and wherever she went, she would strike up a conversation with anyone, including conversations to defend her beloved Dallas Cowboys NFL football team. Her warm and loving personality was often the life of the party. Her big heart made it easy for her to gain many acquaintances and friends. In her neighborhood community, she participated in cleanup; and advocated tirelessly for change for a better neighborhood. By faith, she would often reach out to local elected officials to advocate for her neighborhood community.
When confronted with illness, she never cowered; but persevered to remain independently active. It was through her determination that she made sure that Briana graduated from high school with accolades and was accepted into college. She was tenacious in making sure that Ashley re-enrolled in college to finish her undergraduate degree. She was so proud when Taylor graduated from TSU, her alma mater. As a mother, she demonstrated bravery, courage, perseverance, acceptance, and faith. She seldom complained. Despiteher battle with cancer, she remained active with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.-Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter and the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc.- Houston Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Lee and Wilma Celestine and her brother, Wendell Celestine. Her beautiful life will be cherished by her daughters; Ashley Webber, Taylor Webber, and Briana Webber; her sister, Andrea Michelle Celestine, and nephew, Miguel Saint Celestine.
Marie was a devoted mother, loving sister, and dedicated friend. She touched the lives of many and will be missed by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, family, and close friends.
