In the early morning hours of Monday, October 27, 2025, Vernice “Alan” Atkins, 56, of Green Mountain, North Carolina, passed away at his parent’s home in Spruce Pine.

Alan was born in McDowell County to Alma Silvers Atkins and the late Vernus Bud Atkins on July 29, 1969. He was the owner and operator of Appalachian Paving & Grading, a business started alongside his father. When he was not working, Alan could often be found bear hunting or fishing. These things brought him great joy. A loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he will be deeply missed.

In addition to his mother, Alma Atkins, he is survived by his wife, Shannon Pearson Atkins; four children, Jacob Atkins (Erin), Josh Atkins (Savannah), Natalie Smith (Travis), and Kolton Atkins (Amanda); five grandchildren, Bailey, Charlotte, Kane, Fancy, and Raylan; one brother, Jonathan Atkins (Callie); and one sister, Chrystal Greene (Chris).

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the Estatoe Church of God, located at 3556 Penland Road in Spruce Pine. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Wayne Braswell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
