Vernice "Windy" Glen Halbur, son of Frank and Frances (Bierl) Halbur, was born September 11, 1934. He was one of twelve children, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Augustine Church in Halbur. He spent his early years on his family farm located north of the town. Following a fire at the family home, Windy and his siblings were sent to live with relatives before rejoining his parents in Coon Rapids, Iowa. He met the love of his life, Nancy Yoss, while trying to impress her at a roller skating rink. Windy and Nancy were united in marriage on September 11, 1954 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. To this union, five children were born: Glen, Paula, Mark, Gary and Vicki. Windy and Nancy were long members of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Throughout his life, he held various positions within the community of Carroll and owned multiple businesses. He worked at Spencer Construction, J.A. Tacke and owned and operated Halbur Auto Clinic for 27 years. Windy also co-operated a consignment shop called The White Elephant for four years. Prior to retirement at age 62, he worked at Wal-Mart where he earned the nickname, "Bike Man" for his work putting together bicycles. In his later years, Windy enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling with Nancy across the country. He was an avid collector of Hot Wheels, enjoyed watching westerns and a fan of Roy Rogers. Windy also enjoyed attending "Friday night pizza and fires", playing cards with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always whistled while he worked. Preceding him in death were his wife Nancy, his parents Frank and Frances, sons Glen and Mark, grandson Steven Oelrich, as well as siblings Edward, Daniel, Leonard, Norbert, Irene Steffes and Shirley Korwes. He is survived by his children: Paula Smith of Boone, Gary (Becky) Halbur and Vicki Halbur of Omaha, NE. Grandchildren: Traci Tucker, Nikki Larrew, Michael Halbur, Holly Schaefer, Ashley Nelson, Matthew Jayne, and Amanda Halbur. 18 great-grandchildren and siblings: Wayne, Gene, Mary Neuerburg, Dorothy Dunn and Ruth Overmohle. .
