Vernon Kaskey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legacy Options Funeral and Cremation Services, LLC - Naples on Mar. 9, 2023.
Vernon C. Kaskey of Naples, Florida passed away on March 8, 2023 at the age of 91. After several months of slowing down, Vern died peacefully with his daughter Julie by his side in his home in Naples Florida.
Vern was born in Aurelia Iowa on July 9th, 1931, to father Clearance and mother Clara Kaskey.
Vern loved sports: played point guard, centerfield, trumpet, was a pole vaulter (missing teeth to prove it) and the odd combination of quarterback and middle linebacker. He was valedictorian of his high school class (20 Graduates) and according to his yearbook was nick-named "Cornball Kaskey". After graduating from Iowa State with an engineering degree, Vern picked up tennis and became well known as a crafty highly rated player in Jacksonville FL, Darien CT, Paris France, and Savannah GA. Golf came later in life and as Dad would say "Maybe I should have picked it up before retirement". He was an excellent putter.
Vern loved his wife Sandi and family. Dad's golden rule was family first, loyalty, doing the right thing, work hard and play hard. Wife, Family, God, Friends and Country meant everything to Dad. He led by example. A 35 year career at Union Carbide, 53 years as a devoted husband to the love of his life Sandi, a Korean War Vet, and the best grandfather to 9 grandchildren that he loved dearly. He was an avid fan of anything that his kids and grandkids did.
Vern loved helping others: His "to do lists" were quite extensive, written out on index cards and carried in his front shirt pocket. They included calling friends and chores for the kids, but mostly stuff he couldn't do during the work week. If you did appear on the to do list, the list became a "teaching moment" or "disciplinary action". No one mastered the to do list better than Mom. Once confronted with, "the bathrooms seem a bit dirty", Mom immediately put cleaning the bathrooms on his to do list. Dad cleaned the bathrooms from that day on. Also added to his to do list was building crafts and furniture for Mom. If you needed a hand, he was always ready to help.
Vern was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sandra Evans Kaskey, his parents and by his brother Eugene Kaskey and sister Deloris Wharton. He is survived by his sons Bruce (Christy) and Steve(Liz), daughter Julie Kaskey Brown and grandchildren, Bruce, Matt, Courtney, Brian, Sara, Claire, Caley, Reese and Nathan.
A celebration of Vern's life will take place in Savannah Georgia, on a date to be determined.

Shelly (Winnert) Mahoney

March 11, 2023

I have such fond memories of both Vern & Sandi. I'd always go see them when I was at the Landings visiting my parents, Mary Lee and Ken Winnert. I'd sub into my dad's tennis group every summer and played Vern many times. One line I'll never forget is when a guy said, "Watch out Shelly, Vern beats his serve to the net!" Those guys had such a great sense of humor. I have some of Sandi's gourds that she gave me one year, many years ago.
Thinking of your family and the wonderful people that Vern & Sandi were!!
