Vernon Murchison Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home & Crematory - DeLand on Jan. 20, 2026.
Clay Murchison, a proud United States Navy veteran, devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on January 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on July 23, 1951, in New Jersey, Clay lived a life defined by helping anyone and everyone, craftsmanship, integrity, and deep devotion to those he loved.

Clay served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973. The values he gained through his service-discipline, loyalty, and strength of character-guided him throughout his life. He was an exceptionally talented cabinet maker, known for his skill, attention to detail, and pride in his work. His cabinet shop was more than a place of labor; it was where his creativity thrived and where countless meaningful moments were spent. Above all, Clay was a family man. He shared 50 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Sheryl Murchison. Their marriage was a true partnership built on loyalty, laughter, and unwavering support. He was preceded in death by his father, Jess Clay Murchison, his mother, Susan Murchison, and his brother John Murchison. He is survived by his loving stepmother, Ann Murchison, and his brother, Chad Murchison.

Clay leaves behind his cherished children:

Chris Murchison and Donna Murchison (Daughter-in-law)

April Chilson and Brent Chilson (Son-in-law)

Brandy Mathews (son-in-law Ted Mathews, who preceded him in death in 2024)

Sandra Hall and L.P. Hall

John D. Brown

He was a proud grandfather to Cody Chilson, Devin Chilson, Kyle Murchison, Ashley Murchison, and Kayla Diehl, and a devoted great-grandfather to Grayson, Madelyn, Baleigh, Slayden, Onyx and Lawson. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and making memories with them.

Known for his strong character, fun-loving spirit, and outspoken nature, Clay never hesitated to speak his mind or share a laugh. He loved family time, working in his cabinet shop, collecting coins with his best friend Ken Cassidy, and enjoying movie nights especially with his loving wife Sheryl.

Clay leaves behind a legacy of humor, craftsmanship, honesty, and deep family devotion. He will be remembered not only for what he built with his hands, but for the love, values, and memories he built within his family. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Funeral services will be scheduled and announced at a later date. Expressions of sympathy, including flowers and condolences may be sent to his wife, Sheryl Murchison, at her residence.
