Vernon Paul Phillips, a cherished and a devoted family man, passed away on September 21, 2025, just four days shy of his 90th birthday. He was born on September 25, 1935, in Miles, Texas, to Paul and Minnie Ola (Sawyer) Phillips, who preceded him in death.
Vernon lived a life dedicated to service and support, both as a business owner and a community volunteer. For 19 years, he was the proud owner of Western Auto, where he served not only as an entrepreneur but also as a pillar of the community. His commitment extended beyond his business as he volunteered with the Fire Department and EMS in Olney for approximately 40-45 years, embodying the spirit of helping others that defined his character. After his retirement Vernon trapped hogs and had a small engine repair shop. Friends lovingly referred to him as the “hog man”.
A good Christian man, Vernon drew strength and inspiration from his faith and cherished time spent with his family. He held a deep affection for his wife, Barbara Joy Phillips, and took great pride in his roles as husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving spouse of sixty-nine years, Barbara; his son, Bill (Lawanna) Phillips; his daughter, Glenna (Brad) Stuart; his brothers, John Phillips and Joseph Phillips; his sisters, Patricia Robbins, and Molly Bruce; eight beloved grandchildren, Lyndi (Casey) Boone, Hunter Stuart, Lauren (Andrew) Dillin, Danci (Chad) Dennis, Hailey (Micah) Brooker, Taylor Phillips, Jessa Heyden, and Taylor Jeffrey; and seven great grandchildren Menley and Swazey Boone, Brody, Kinsley, and Paxton Dillin, Mesa and Whitt Dennis.
In addition to his family and career, Vernon enjoyed hobbies that brought him joy, including fishing, hunting, and vacationing with his family in Colorado. His love for the outdoors fostered lasting memories with his family, which he always treasured.
Vernon is preceded in death by his siblings, Herman Phillips and Juanita Barbee, who will be welcomed as he joins them in eternal rest.
Visitation will be held on September 25, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Roby Church of Christ, located at 1701 S 1st St, Roby, TX 79543. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place at 2:00 PM. Burial will be in the Roby Cemetery.
Vernon Paul Phillips leaves behind a legacy defined by love, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to his family and community. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
