Veronica Master Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Stephens City on Dec. 29, 2025.
Veronica Mae Master, 98, of Stephens City, Va, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

Veronica was born February 18, 1927, in Grassflat, Pa. to the late Andrew J. and Mary (Patrick) Pewanick.

On June 1, 1957, in Cleveland, Ohio, Veronica married her husband, John, of 68 years, who survives at home. The two met at Union Carbide, their place of employment. Together they had five children. Upon marriage, Veronica was a loving wife and mother, dedicating her life to her family. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. She prided herself on making a home for her family in which God was the center. Born into a devout Roman Catholic family, God remained first and foremost in all she did.

Veronica was a 1944 graduate of Cooper Township High School in Grassflat, Pa. Upon graduating, she worked in a shirt factory for five years before moving to Cleveland, Ohio which became her home until 1972. In August of 1972, she and her family moved to Stephens City, Va where she lived for the remainder of her life. She loved the Shenandoah Valley and often commented on it being the most beautiful part of the country.

Veronica was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Winchester, Va. She belonged to the Legion of Mary and was a member of the Franciscan Order, both of which she truly loved being a part. Her faith guided her throughout her life; she prayed unceasingly.

Veronica was an avid scrabble player. She and her husband played the board game together every evening after dinner, which many believe contributed to their longevity. She enjoyed reading nonfiction and learning, as Veronica spoke four languages, English, Slovak, French and Latin. Her love of language and keen memory served her well, as she could recite the Preamble to the Constitution and the entirety of the Gettysburg Address from memory up until her last days. She loved to be quizzed and was a gifted conversationalist. She possessed a wonderful sense of humor, often making others around her laugh. She enjoyed taking day trips to Charles Town, WV, visiting the casinos.

In addition to her husband John, Veronica is survived by her four children: Arleen Carbaugh (Anthony) of Stephens City, Mary Jane Smith of Strasburg, Va, Charlotte Bruno (Joseph) of Waxhaw, NC and Kenneth Master of Atlanta, Ga. She was a loving grandmother to six grandchildren: Brandon Luttrell, Crystal Lucas, Michael Bruno (Nicole), John Bruno, Christopher Bruno (Melina) and Rachel Sager (Jordan); and a great-grandmother to three: Amelia, Clara, and Mary Katherine.

In addition to her parents, Veronica was preceded in death by her son, John Glenn, five brothers: John, Andrew, Joseph, Michael and Edward and six sisters: Ann, Mary, Helen, Margaret, Dorothy and Barbara.
