Verty Fern Konkey, 90, of Niles, died peacefully Sunday, August 17, 2025, in the comfort of her family's presence.
Her life began May 27, 1935, in Swifton, Arkansas, the youngest of ten children born to Jeff and Theresa Satterfield. She married David Konkey in Niles on February 20, 1956.
Verty "Fern" enjoyed being outdoors, especially with her garden and tending to her flowers. Cooking was her love language, and was known for her peach cobbler and carrot cake. Verty enjoyed college sports, Notre Dame women's basketball and men's football, and Cub's baseball.
Verty will be missed by family and friends. She is survived by her beloved husband, David Konkey, of sixty-nine years. One daughter, Terry (John) Davis of South Bend, Indiana; one son Tony (Christine) Konkey of Niles, thirteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two great-great grandsons and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Elizabeth Konkey; one son, Daniel Konkey; one granddaughter, Serinna Wirick; five sisters, Frankie King, Bernice Couch, Frances Head, Violene Rodgers, Hazel Scott; four brothers, David Satterfield, Richard Garrison, Elmo and Andy Satterfield.
Family and friends will gather in Halbritter Wickens Funeral Services, 615 East Main Street, Niles on Saturday, August 23, from 11:00a.m. to the time of the service at 1:00p.m. with the Deacon Roger Gregorski officiating. Verty will be laid to rest in Calvery Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Halbritter Wickens Funeral Services, Niles.
