Victor Robert Grathwohl, 93, of Salisbury, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the North Carolina State Veterans Home surrounded by family. He was born July 28, 1931, in Niles, Michigan, to the late Marshall Grathwohl and the late Eva Rayfuse Grathwohl.
Victor, the youngest of six children, grew up in Niles, graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque, Iowa and attended Michigan State University. He was a veteran Unites States Navy Pipefitter serving in the Korean War on the USS Ajax and USS Dixie warships.
On June 18, 1960, in Niles, MI., Victor married Bette L. Warnke, recently celebrating their 65th anniversary. They were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salisbury and former members of St. Basil Catholic Church in South Haven, Michigan.
Victor was a mechanical engineer in the paper manufacturing industry. He worked for Simplicity Pattern Company in Niles and Massena, New York, and James River Company, Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was a master craftsman, a remarkedly good tennis player, and a legendary apple pie connoisseur.
Most notably, Victor was a wonderful and kind person. His impish grin and quick wit drew people in. His love for family never wavered.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Bette Grathwohl, son; David Grathwohl (Susan) of Salisbury, daughters; Kimberly Grathwohl of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Susan (Zach) Park of Tampa, Florida, granddaughters; Maggie Grathwohl of Wilmington, North Carolina, Abby (Chandler) Inions, of Salisbury.
Victor was proceeded in death by his sisters; Mary Ann (Richard) Drury, Betty (William) Vanderbeck, Margaret Bohner, and brothers; Joseph (Mary Lou) Grathwohl, and Father John Grathwohl.
Services will be held on October 1st at St. Basil Catholic Church, 513 Monroe Blvd. South Haven, Michigan, with Father Bob Flickinger officiating. Visitation 10:00am and Mass 11:00am.
The burial will be held on October 2nd at Calvary Cemetery in Niles at 1:00pm.
