It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Victor "Bomber" Michael Matuszak of Caro. Victor passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 25, 2024 at the age of 81. Victor was born November 19, 1942 in Bay City, the son of the late Stephen & Patricia (Litt) Matuszak. He grew up north of Caro until moving with his family to the Hamilton Farm on Colwood Road where Victor learned to become a steward of the land and where he began a lifelong career in farming. Victor graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1961, attended Bay City School of Commerce, and worked for a time at the sugar factory in Caro before being drafted to the U.S. Army in 1964. His service to country began at Fort Knox, Kentucky and also took him to Fort Gordon, Georgia and Stuttgart, Germany, and he was proud to have earned the recognition of best soldier in his battalion. Following his honorable discharge in 1966, Victor returned to the sugar factory before taking a position with General Motors at the powertrain plant in Bay City in a career that spanned thirty years, retiring in 1997. He was united in marriage with Rosemary Trisch on December 26, 1964 at Sacred Heart Church in Caro and the couple was looking forward to celebrating their sixtieth anniversary later this year. The couple lived in a small home on Gilford Road before moving to what would become their permanent home and farm for the next forty-five years on Weeden Road. Victor was a member of St. Christopher Parish, Sacred Heart Church in Caro and the Caro Moose Lodge. He was happiest outdoors, farming his land, working in the woods, hunting for mushrooms, and riding his Ranger around the property. Over the years, Victor amassed an impressive collection of over four hundred hats, but despite having an expansive selection to choose from, he typically rotated between wearing three or so different hats on a regular basis. He was also a talented bowler from an early age and enjoyed watching old Westerns and cheering on his beloved Detroit Tigers and Lions.
Left to cherish Victor's memory are his loving wife, Rosemary Matuszak of Caro; one son and his wife, Brian & Barb Matuszak of Bloomfield Township; son-in-law, Matt Groombridge of Cass City; grandchildren, Isabella and Christopher Matuszak, Heather Baker and her significant other, Jeremy King; great-grandchildren, Olyvia, Ryker, and Payton; siblings and their spouses, Jim & Julie Matuszak of Caro, Anne & Tom Dunham of Caro; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Victor was preceded in death by his daughter, Christina Groombridge; siblings, Harold Matuszak, Mike Matuszak, and Connie Enos.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024 at St. Christopher Parish, Sacred Heart Church, in Caro with Rev. T. J. Fleming officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Caro with military honors afforded by the U.S. Army and the Caro American Legion Post #7.
