VICTOR L. POIRIER

POIRIER, Victor L. Age 84, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Carmel C. (Baron) Poirier. Victor was born on July 3, 1941, in Lowell. He was the youngest son of the late Joseph N. (Paul) Poirier and Beatrice (LaJeunesse) Poirier. He is survived by his two daughters, Donna M. Garcia of Tyngsboro and Nicolle M. Longman of Middlebury, VT; three grandchildren, Sarah and Kevin Garcia and Benjamin Longman; his two brothers, Dr. J. Leon and Paul Poirier; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his only son, Michael G. Poirier (1982); and his only sister, Jeannine Provost (2005). Victor, a pioneering mechanical engineer and inventor, dedicated over five decades to revolutionizing artificial heart technology, earning international acclaim and numerous prestigious awards, including his election to the National Academy of Engineering. He founded two public companies to commercialize his HeartMate device, which has restored active lives to over 55,000 patients suffering from heart failure. Alongside his technical achievements, Victor was a passionate educator and mentor, shaping innovation curricula and serving as a professor and lecturer at several esteemed institutions. A private service will be held for immediate family with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
