Victor Edwin Stewart
With immense sadness, his family announces that Victor Edwin Stewart died at the age of 73 on June 17th in the arms of his son James, at his treasured family home, surrounded by all the blessings of his wondrous life. He leaves behind his wife Carol Goulian Stewart- the love of his life and the greatest woman he'd ever met- just days after celebrating a joyous 39th wedding anniversary, as well as his three sons Victor, James and Andrew, named in order of seniority. He also leaves behind his sisters Caroline and Sylvia, as well as his brother Jay.
Victor was born in Manhattan on September 19th 1950, and grew up amongst his family homes on Park Avenue in New York, Charles Street in Mayfair, London, and Sam Lord's Castle in Barbados. He was a scholar of the highest order: he attended Buckley School, continued on as Valedictorian of the class of 1968 at St. Mark's School, then graduated from Yale College class of 1972, Harvard Business School class of 1975, and UVA Law School class of 1979. Beyond his native language of English, he was fluent or proficient in French, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek and Middle Egyptian hieroglyphics. A member of the Triple Nine Society, Victor's intellect reigned supreme.
He began his career in finance, later working as an Investment Banker at Deutsche Bank before co-founding Manhattan's premier class action law firm, Lovell Stewart Halebian Jacobson LLP, prosecuting claims involving commodity manipulation and price fixing, and exchange related antitrust claims. Victor was Senior Partner and Chairman of the securities law department specializing in securities litigation, public and private securities offerings both as issuer's and underwriter's counsel, arbitrage, mortgage securitization and financial markets analysis.
Victor was an avid traveler who explored many corners of the world, seeking out firsthand experiences in as many cultures as he could find. He was deeply knowledgable in all facets of human history, and an avid collector of books and paintings. As a dedicated reader he continually learned about subjects that fascinated him such as history and literature.
He was a proud Freemason, serving as master of his lodge, Kane Lodge #454, twice.
Victor also cared deeply for family and tradition. This tied into his love for the United Kingdom, the birth place of his father, George Stewart, the founder of Stewart Smith Group. He participated in many philanthropic initiatives with the Royal Family, and was active at Westminster Abbey, as well as serving as the Chairman of the Board of the Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Manhattan. He was also the former President of both the St. Andrew's Society and the St. George's Society of Manhattan.
He will be missed beyond the capacity of expression, and will never be forgotten by his wife, his children or the countless lives he touched. His legacy will live on forever.

Victor and his family will always be treasured by me and my family. I grew up in many ways at Sam Lords Castle. I had a crush on Caroline and we all loved Jay and his father George. This is the last time we saw Victor at our old house (Moles-Hole) in Barbados, he loved his Rum and was an amazing raconteur. The castle was burnt and looted years ago, in a way symbolizing those lost wonderful days in our Barbados paradise.

Dear Carol,

I am heartbroken to learn of Victor's passing. He was such a special person and I will remember him always. I was blessed to have gotten to know Victor at UVA law school and to have had him as a friend. My love to you and your entire family. May the burden of your loss get easier to bear over time, and your memories of your time together bring you joy.

Dear Carol,

I am sending you my and my family's heartfelt sympathies and condolences. My brother and I worked with Victor over 20 years ago. We still have fond and vivid memories of our conversations with Victor. He was an incredibly eloquent, intelligent and memorable man - a force of nature. He is an incredible loss.

We wish you strength in these difficult times.

Dear Carol,

Wishing you the deepest sympathies and condolences. Victor was simply extraordinary in so many ways an I cannot express how much of an influence Victor had in my own life, even for the relatively short period of time that we spent together.

Truly,

Dear Carol it is with heavy heart that I learned of the loss of your husband Victor and father of your three wonderful boys..He was a friend's friend. One who could always be counted on. I recall with great fondness rides in one or the other of his prized autos. Thank you for sharing him with all of us!

Carol (and the Stewart family),

It was with sadness that I learned of the recent passing of my former St. Marks School classmate, Victor Stewart. I remember him for his strong leadership qualities, his distinction in the classroom, his athletic prowess and his disarming wit. He was regarded as among those who would go on to accomplish great things. And he did, as attested to in this obituary.
Having lost two close family members earlier this year (my dad, Andy, Jr. (age 97)--SM class of '44, and my brother, Bob (age 72)--SM class of '70) I know something of the sense of loss that you are going through. Let me assure you of my heartfelt sympathy as I offer this expression of condolence for your loss. You are in my prayers.

Sincerely,

R. Andrew Fletcher III

I distinctly remember my first observation of Victor presiding over Kane Lodge as the sitting master. His command of the position was remarkable. It was apparent he had near total recall as he presided through many hours of ritual leading the Lodge as only he could do.

He was a brilliant source of Masonic information, a leader and always helpful to others seeking his direction. When circumstances became complicated and needed a deft hand of guidance he was the rock we could all rely on. His counsel will be a great loss to us all.

RIP my brother and may God bless your soul!

Carol,
10 yrs ago the Stewart family accidently came into my life and what a blessing it has been. I loved Victor like a big brother and you like a sister. You and the boys are in our thoughts and prayers. Saying Victor was one of a kind would be a gross understatement! I will miss him terribly and cherish all the crazy memories. To quote a friend....."If it clicked with him, it was friends for life"
