Obituary published on Legacy.com by Reis Family Mortuary and Crematory - San Luis Obispo on Apr. 1, 2025.
Sadly, our beloved Momma, Vigdis Hokit, 84, passed away on March 21, 2025. She was born to Kristjan Josefsson and Gudrun Kristinsdottir on February 13, 1941. Momma was born on a dairy farm in Iceland named Eystra Midfell. She began working on the farm as early as she could remember. She recalled, at age 7, driving on narrow dirt roads, crossing bridges down to the main road in a flatbed truck hauling milk cannisters that were too heavy for her to lift. The family moved to Reykjavik when her father became ill and could not manage and work on the farm any longer. He passed away when she was age 12 and she spoke of that loss and the loss of her young sister for the rest of her life. At age 12 she applied for, and was accepted to Kvennaskolinn, a very prestigious all-girls school. The curriculum was very rigorous, and much was expected of the students. She recalled one instructor assigning students to read Icelandic Saga's during the Christmas holiday with the expectation they provide a written report on their reading upon returning to school. Kvennaskolinn groomed their girls to be perfectionists, with anything graded less than an "A" being considered failing. Along with many other subjects, she was taught to knit, sew, crochet, cross stitch along with many other crafts using yarn and thread. Each of her pieces of work were masterpieces. She would not finish any project unless it was absolutely perfect; the back sides of her work were as nicely done as the front sides. As a teenager, Momma loved to listen to the U.S. Military radio stations that would play rock and roll music where she came to love Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Everly Brothers along with others. Upon graduation at age 18, she was set on visiting her eldest sister who had married an American and was living in Colton, CA. While visiting, she met George and Mary Croy at a Church Camp in 1959. Mary became a second mother to her and Momma adored her. It was through Mary that Momma met her soon to be husband and they became parents of 3 children. Momma re-married in 1990 to Donald Hokit who was a wonderful man in every way imaginable. Momma and Don enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, and life together. Momma was predeceased by her parents, three of her four sisters, her husband Donald Hokit, grandson Tomislav Radich (1999) and grandson Nickolas Cotten (2022). Momma is survived by her brokenhearted daughters Elizabeth Cotten, Michele Radich, son Kristjan Cindrich (Gina McKernon-Cindrich), grandchildren Ashleigh Cindrich, Grant Cindrich, and sister Hrafnildur Kristjansdottir along with many other cherished nephews, nieces, friends and other relatives who will all miss her dearly.
