Vincent McKenna Obituary
With a heavy heart, we share that our father, retired USAF Capt. Vincent P. "Bud" McKenna, passed away on September 9, 2025.
Dad left this world much like he lived in it-calm, stoic, and strong. On the day of his passing he looked to the ceiling and said, "OH! They're coming!" We believe he was being welcomed by all who went before him, with my Mom, the love of his life, leading the way.
That was the last thing he said. A short while later he became unresponsive. Mike was at his side as he passed peacefully, and held the phone to dad's ear as people called to say their goodbyes. We're sure he heard them.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Dad could come across as a bit of a curmudgeon. But if he called you "yucky Mike" or "yucky Claire," you knew you were A-OK in his book. Mom always said, "Everyone loves Bud," and she was right. His dry sense of humor always managed to surprise us.
Kids absolutely flocked to him-he was game for wrestling, reading quietly, or just chilling with cartoons. He was the absolute best "Pappa" to his granddaughters. We have fond memories of him snuggling with Sammy or Gwen on the couch, with their blankies in hand and thumb in mouth, tucked safely in his arms, as content as could be. He was tickled pink when Sammy chose the University of Tennessee, his alma mater and never missed cheering on the Vols. He also loved the Yankees, the Sharks, and the 49ers.
He called our dogs "muttface" but still wanted full reports on them. Cats, however… he preferred to call "10 points."
Dad served over 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, working in Strategic Air Command and with the SR-71 on record-breaking Blackbird missions. He later spent another 20 years with Lockheed Missile & Space, contributing to the Stealth Bomber and other projects. He was fiercely proud to serve his country.
Bud is survived by his children, granddaughters, Sammy and Gwen, and a wide circle of family and friends who will miss his steadfast presence.
We have such love and respect for you, Dad. We know you are with Mom again, and that brings us peace.
