Violet Marie (Heun) Umber was 82 years old and born on May 16, 1943, in Bismarck North Dakota, to Albert and Catherine Heun. She passed away on February 3, 2026, peacefully at her home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Violet was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Richard Umber.
Violet spent the first nine years of her life going between Portland, Oregon and Strasburg, North Dakota, where her father had farmed. At the age of nine, they moved permanently to North Dakota.
Violet met the love of her life, Richard Umber, at a wedding in 1958. He was the best man, and she was the maid of honor. (He thought maybe it was a set up!) It wasn’t long until they were married themselves on July 14, 1959, in Strasburg, North Dakota. They farmed there for two years and then moved to Sturgeon Lake Minnesota and farmed for another 13 1/2 years before moving to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota in 1974.
Richard and Violet raised six wonderful children, Sharon Umber, Tricia Pierce (Tim), Susan Blaine (Steve), Deborah Umber-Stork (Todd), John Umber (Gloria), and Ruth Umber. They have 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Violet was a devoted Seventh-day Adventist church member and lived her life grounded in faith, prayer, and service to others. She faithfully attended the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, where she found joy in worship and fellowship. She will be remembered for her kindness, quiet strength, generosity, love of family, devotion to God, and for the example she set through her faith filled life. Her hope rested firmly in the promise of Christ’s return.
Violet’s funeral will be February 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 404 Ridgewood Rd., Detroit Lakes, MN 56501
