Scotland Neck – Virginia Louise Batchelor Smith, 87, passed away at the Scotland House in Scotland Neck, NC on Thursday, January 1, 2026. She was born on December 16, 1938, to Doc and Ola Batchelor in Clarington, NC.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday at 11am at Pinewood Memorial Park.
Virginia spent most of her life in Greenville, NC. She worked for the Kmart Department Store for more than 25 years, where she retired. She loved people and loved going to church. She was a faithful member of the Rose Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church and she sung in the choir for years. Later in Virginia's life she attended The Pentecostal Sanctuary Church in Winterville.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Herman Ezzell, husband, Edmond L. Smith, daughter, Pamela Lou Barnes, son, Thomas Garland Waters, and sisters, Gladys Powell and Betty Marie Ezzell.
She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Kay Maheux (Kenneth); granddaughter, Kayla Marie Durst; brothers, Dock Batchelor and Alfred Ezzell (Lisa); sisters, Ola Bradshaw (Donald), Carolyn Hulon, Gail Blalock (Jessie); six nephews; four nieces; and stepson, Edmond L. Smith, Jr. of Hudson, FL.
