Virginia Hoffman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home and Cremation Chapel - Covington on Dec. 16, 2025.
The obituary was lovingly prepared by the family.

Virginia Ann Smith Hoffman went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 13th, 2025. She was born to R.T. and Francis Smith on May 28th, 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia. Virginia Ann was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law Edna Hoffman, sister- in- law Peggy McClure Smith and her brother R. T. Smith, Jr.

Virginia Ann grew up in the Druid Hills area of Atlanta but spent her weekends and summers on their family farm in Covington, Georgia. Her family eventually moved to Covington permanently in 1958. She attended the University of Georgia and became a member of the Phi Mu Sisterhood. She remained an enthusiastic Bulldog fan for the entirety of her life.

It was during her time spent in Covington that she met the love of her life, Harold Hoffman. They were married on April 6, 1962 and maintained a devoted marriage for 63 1/2 years. They were blessed with a son, Hal Hoffman, in 1966. These two men were the absolute light of her life. Virginia Ann placed great emphasis on her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her family, her friends and her community.

She and Harold owned several businesses over the years, including Covington Mower and Marine and The Saw Shop. She served as bookkeeper for their businesses along with serving on many different boards and committees throughout her time in Covington. She was den mother for Hal's Cub Scout troop, along with volunteering regularly at his school. She served as a member of the Covington Planning Commission for 20 years until she was needed to help care for her ailing father. She was incredibly passionate about the future of her hometown while making sure the history was preserved. She served on the Covington Service Guild and was also a faithful member of Covington First United Methodist Church for many years. While she was busy with all of these commitments, she was also diagnosed with and beat breast cancer. She was a true southern lady, but she was also full of courage, strength and determination.

Being as multifaceted as she was, Virginia Ann enjoyed many hobbies. She loved gardening and was a proud member of the Satsuki Garden Club. She held various positions in this club over the years and was pleased with the work they accomplished. She also loved to play bridge. As a result, she was a member of several bridge clubs throughout the years. She loved to entertain and host parties. Virginia Ann was widely known for her etiquette and graciousness. She was an avid lover and supporter of the arts through the Arts Association in Newton County. She and Harold were world travelers, visiting many exciting destinations over the years. Australia and Hawaii were two of her favorites. For many years while she and Harold were in the boat business, they planned and organized an annual boat trip with their customers and friends, and customers that became friends. All of the families would look forward to these wonderful times of fellowship on the water.

Virginia Ann is survived by her husband Harold Hoffman, son Hal Hoffman (Amy) of Oxford, Georgia, niece Kelly Petty (Jim) of Rock Hill, SC, nephew Josh Smith (Judy) of Whitefish, MT. She is also survived by her great nephew and great nieces, Chapman Petty, Macy Petty, and Mary Hannah Smith.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, December 20th at 12PM in the Chapel of J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home. There will be an hour of visitation before the service at 11AM.
