Virginia Johnson, 94, of Morning Sun, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 in Winona Lake, Indiana where Virginia had made her home for the last couple of years. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 27, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Morning Sun, IA. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at the Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church (SRPC) Vacation Bible School, 25204 160th Avenue, Morning, Sun, Iowa. Mary Virginia Johnson was born on April 15, 1928 at home north of Morning Sun. She was the daughter of Clyde Carson and Mary Latha (Campbell) McElhinney. Virginia was a 1945 graduate of Wapello High School and went on to further her education at Coe College where she received her teaching certificate. On July 3, 1948 she married Fritz Johnson in Webster City, Iowa. To this union two children were born Tim and Melanie. Virginia taught school in Webster City and Morning Sun; was the bookkeeper of the family farming business, worked at Glass Smart Shop and owned and operated Yes Virginia's Gift Shop. She was a member of PEO, played bridge multiple times a week, hosted a women's bible study in her home for several years, and directed the Sharon Church Vacation Bible School for 50 years. Virginia enjoyed following her grandchildren in their activities, hosting family holiday celebrations and was a lifelong avid college wrestling and Chicago Cubs fan.
Virginia will be deeply missed by her children: Tim (Lisa) Johnson of Champaign, Illinois and Melanie (Randy) Kleinhans from Warsaw, Indiana; grandchildren, Allie (Kyle) Ruschell and Timmie Johnson, Carley (David) Slater, Lauren (Mathis) Miller, Eric (Teresa) Kleinhans, Jenny (James) Poe, Emily (Ryan) Skaar; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Zelda Garretson and Sharon Galloway; sister-in-law, Kathy McElhinney; nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Beary.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; brother Lloyd McElhinney and infant grand-daughters.
