Virginia Ann Johnstone, age seventy-six of Lebanon, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 12, 2023 in Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. She was born August 28, 1946 near Phillipsburg, Missouri to Oscar and Naomi Hester. Virginia was raised in the Phillipsburg area and after high school she attended College of the Ozarks, then nursing school, where she graduated as an LPN.
On July 20, 1973, she was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Johnstone and with her daughter, Susan, they made their home in Phillipsburg for several years. They then moved to Springfield, Missouri where Bob finished college. St. Louis would be their next place to call home, as Bob was working for McDonald Douglas. Bob was later offered a position with Boeing in Seattle, Washington and he moved there while Virginia moved to Fulton, Missouri to complete her R.N. certification. She graduated Valedictorian of her class. The next move took them to Wichita, Kansas where she would work as an R.N. while Bob worked for Boeing. Virginia also served in the Navy Reserves. After working as a nurse for some forty years, Virginia retired and moved to Lebanon in 2016.
Virginia loved reading. She also was an animal lover and kept her mind sharp by doing mathematics. She was known to take advanced college math classes just for fun! She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch and embroidery. She made lovely items for herself as well as friends and family.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, on November 13, 2015; her daughter, Susan Roberts, on November 2, 2020; her parents, Oscar and Naomi Hester and her sister, Helen Letterman.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Joy Johnstone of Kansas City, Missouri; three nieces, Kimberlee Link, Brittney Stark and Barbara Jean Duncan; a nephew, Marc Johnstone; two great-nephews, Tyler and Alex Johnstone; and one great-great-nephew, Jamie Johnstone.
Virginia was a Christian and had attended the Christian Church throughout most her life. Recently she had started attending St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lebanon.
She was a very caring and loving woman and found joy in helping people. The memories she created with those she knew and loved will be cherished for years to come.
Graveside services for Virginia Johnstone will be Friday, June 16 at 10:00 am. at Twilight Cemetery near Conway, Missouri.
A memorial has been established to Claws and Paws and donations may be left at the funeral home.
