Virginia McDermott Obituary

Virginia McDermott Schenectady- Virginia McDermott, 87, of Schenectady passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 18th at home surrounded by her family. She was born in California the daughter of the late Charles and Helena Lefler Lowe and spent her youth between there and Arizona where she moved at age 10. As an adult, she moved to Yonkers, NY where she lived until moving to Schenectady in 1979.
Virginia worked for the NYS Labor Department from which she retired as an Assistant Purchasing Agent in 2000. She enjoyed traveling, summers at the lake and volunteering at St. Clare's Hospital. Most of all Virginia enjoyed spending time with her family and her different cats over the years. She was a long time member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Schenectady.
In addition to her parents she was also predeceased by two sons, Joseph and Bill McDermott; and two brothers, Robert and Doug Lowe.
Survivors include her four children, Sharon (Stanley) Karwan, Daniel McDermott, Kelly (Tom) Gerg and Susan Kelley; her 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive relatives and friend on Monday from 2 until 4 p.m where the Ladies AOH are asked to gather for a prayer service at 3:30 p.m at Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State St., Schenectady. Funeral services to follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will be held and a private inurnment at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association; Schenectady City Mission; or the Animal Protective Foundation of Scotia. To express condolences visit www.sbfuneralhome.com.
