Virginia McMULKIN

Virginia Marie McMulkin (Weiser) passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, at the age of 84. Virginia was born February 1, 1941, in Bison, Kansas, to Frank and Regina Weiser. She grew up on a farm outside of Norton, Kansas. She attended school at a one-room country schoolhouse until 8th grade, where she was generally the only student in her class.

Virginia graduated in 1959 from Norton High School. She met her future husband, Francis (Bill) William McMulkin, at the Norton city pool, although neither of them knew how to swim. They were married September 3, 1960. They moved around Kansas for several years while Bill taught at various schools, and had three children, Kevin, Kay, and Mark. They ventured to Washington State in 1967 for Bill to complete his Master's degree at W.S.U. They moved to Spokane and lived in the same house in Spokane since 1968. Virginia completed her Bachelor of Science college degree at E.W.U. in 1974. She worked as a Dietitian at Holy Family Hospital, as a Food Service Manager at Valley Hospital, and at Deaconess Hospital, all totaling nearly 30 years. Her husband of over 25 years died on December 23, 1987.

Virginia and Bill raised three children. She was a devoted mother. She cherished time with her family. She and Bill took their family camping, boating, hiking, and on many summer trips back to Kansas to visit relatives. Virginia especially enjoyed time at their Diamond Lake cabin. She had years and years of many cherished memories surrounded by her entire family on long summer days at the lake.

She was an avid reader of cookbooks and delighted in finding and trying new recipes. She enjoyed shopping and was always stylishly dressed for work and home. She learned to swim in her 50s, took up cross-country skiing, and enjoyed her grandchildren. She volunteered with Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels. She was active with Catholic Daughters at St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Despite her later years being marked by the challenges of Parkinson's Disease, she faced each day with courage and grace. She was a determined and delightful person who left a lasting impression. Her legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and faith, and it will continue to shine brightly through the memories she leaves behind.

Virginia is survived by her three children and their spouses: Kevin and Lisa McMulkin, Kay and Ernie Gasseling, and Mark and Bethany McMulkin; nine grandchildren: Steve Gasseling, Rachel (Drew) Oord, Michelle Gasseling, Molly McMulkin, Sophie McMulkin, Megan (Jordan) Christian, Wendy McMulkin, Julie McMulkin, Anna McMulkin; and one great-grandchild, Kaylee Oord. She is also survived by one brother, Leon (Jolene); two sisters, Marcita (Wayne) Scharnhorst and Carol (JC) Field; sister-in-law, Betty (Ron) Frank; sister-in-law, Cathy McMulkin; and brother-in-law, Mike (Linda) McMulkin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; brother, Larry; sister, Rita; in-laws, Vic and Ruth McMulkin; and sister-in-law, Marilyn McMulkin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, January 23, 2026, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Spokane Valley. Burial will be at the Pines Cemetery at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels (www.mowgsc.org).
