Virginia Mudd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home - Warrensburg on Dec. 17, 2025.
Virginia Jean (Stewart) Mudd, age 83, of Warrensburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Shawnee Post Acute Rehab Center in Overland Park.

She was born July 2, 1942, in Warrensburg, MO, the daughter of Eugene and Viola (Lohe) Stewart.

On October 13, 1962, Virginia married William "Bill" Mudd at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warrensburg. Together they shared more than 57 years of a devoted marriage built on faith, family, and a steady commitment to one another.

After a brief time working at the local college, Virginia devoted her life to being a full-time homemaker and mother. As Bill's career took them to several places, Virginia made each move a home. Her four children kept her busy, and she maintained a warm and welcoming household where meals were shared, people were welcome, and care for others came naturally.

Service and generosity were central to Virginia's life. She volunteered faithfully with hospital auxiliaries, spending over 10 years with the Lee's Summit Hospital Auxiliary and 29 years with the Western Missouri Medical Center Auxiliary. She valued the friendships she formed and loved sharing her time and humor with those she helped. She especially enjoyed working in the gift shops and helping visitors find their way through the hospital, offering kindness and reassurance during difficult moments.

A gifted seamstress, Virginia made clothing for her family, décor for her home, thoughtful gifts for loved ones, and countless handcrafted items for auxiliary fundraisers. Everything she made was meant to be used, shared, and appreciated.

After retirement, Bill and Virginia spent several years on a farm west of Warrensburg, enjoying gardens, cattle, horses, dogs, and many, many cats. She especially cherished time there with her grandchildren and friends. After the farm years, she returned to a home in town in Warrensburg, the city she always considered home, where she remained close to family and friends and stayed active in the life around her.

A devoted Catholic throughout her life, Virginia participated in Ladies Guilds at each church she attended. She served in children's ministries, funeral reception ministries, prayer groups, and church fundraisers. Her faith was lived simply and consistently, reflected in the care and thoughtfulness she showed to others.

Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Family was central to her life, and together with Bill, she was a steady and devoted presence for her children and grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Virginia is survived by her children, Karen Phinney (Jeff Rothfus) of De Soto, KS; Michael Mudd of Blue Springs, MO; David Mudd (Shelley) of Napoleon, MO; and Stephen Mudd of Leeton, MO; her grandchildren, Brandon Walker (Andrea), Troy "T.J." Phinney (Tori Clarke), Sierra O'Neal (Ariel Mendiola), Jaycee Mudd, Treven Mudd, Kyle Rothfus, and Kody Rothfus (Bree); her great-grandchildren Savannah and Anderson Walker, Rohan Phinney, and Jax O'Neal; her sister-in-law Mary Stevens; her brothers-in-law Donald Mudd and James Mudd (Rosetta); as well as many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband William "Bill" Mudd; her parents, Eugene and Viola Stewart; and her brother, James "Jim Bob" Stewart.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warrensburg, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. A luncheon will be held afterward at the United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association and may be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.
